Lipstick Under My Burkha is a simple story about four women and their dreams – of financial independence, of becoming a singer, of moving to a big city and of simply, enjoying life.

Four women – all residents of Hawai Manzil in Bhopal – dream of a better life. They are: Shirin (Konkana Sensharma) a wife and mother of three who lives with a controlling Saudi-returned husband (Sushant Singh); Buaji (Ratna Pathak) a 55-year-old widow and Manzil’s matriarch who secretly enjoys racy literature; Rehana (Plabita Borthakur) a burkha-clad teenager who idolises Miley Cyrus and wants to sing in the college band, and Leela (Aahana Kumra) a soon-to-be-married beautician who hopes to escape with her lover (Vikrant Massey). They are rebels with a cause but theirs is a covert movement. Clipping their wings is the society which disapproves of their dreams and their kin who hold them back. Their latent hopes, desires, needs and wants – personally to professionally – is the subject of writer-director Alankrita Shrivastava’s movie.

Every character in the film deals with different kinds of prejudices and restrictions but eventually, they prove to be the same – curbing the freedom of women.

Lipstick under my Burkha brings in a lot of issues – from dictates on women’s clothing to forced sex in a marriage, it addresses all of them boldly. This is a bold film not because it talks of women’s sexuality but because it draws attention to their desires and problems and does so in the most glaring colours. It evokes a gamut of emotions – rage, delight, empathy and more so discourse – because it always feels genuine as it touches upon issues that women have or will confront at some point of their lives, or know of somebody who has.
