Movie Review: ReelViews
The similarities between Daddy’s Home 2 and last week’s release, A Bad Moms Christmas, are striking. Not only are the two films sequels to successful first installments but they follow the similar template of bringing back the most popular elements of the first movie, stirring veteran actors into the mix, and finishing everything off with a big kumbaya moment. Okay, so the main characters in A Bad Moms Christmas are women while they’re men in Daddy’s Home 2. And the former is considerably more ribald than the latter (although neither is “clean” enough to qualify as a “family film”). But both releases feel like they were cut from the same cloth.

Faced with the task of concocting a sequel around the wispiest of comedies, “Daddy’s Home 2” doubles down on daddies. But everything about the process feels strained, laborious and gimmicky, from the casting of Mel Gibson to Will Ferrell’s madcap mugging, trying to stuff this holiday-themed stocking enough to achieve feature length.

“Daddy’s Home 2” isn’t sorry. It doesn’t care about your stupid feelings. Don’t remember what happened at the end of the last movie, or which home belongs to which daddy? Too bad. Don’t want your festive family comedies to star Mel Gibson as a serial womanizer with a flair for violence? Well, “The Man Who Invented Christmas” isn’t out until next week, so you’re shit out of luck. Don’t understand how Will Ferrell could re-team with Mark Wahlberg when a sequel to “Step Brothers” is possibly the only thing that could pull civilization back from the brink? Get in line.
