Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has introduced a new chatbot named Grok, positioning itself as a competitor to established AI models like ChatGPT and Google Bard.
According to xAI, Grok draws inspiration from Douglas Adams’ iconic science fiction series, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The chatbot is designed to embody a witty and somewhat rebellious character.
xAI suggests that potential users should have a sense of humor to fully appreciate Grok’s interactions.
The creators of the chatbot claim that it holds a unique advantage over other conversational AIs due to its “real-time knowledge of the world via the X platform.”
Grok constantly learns from the content shared on X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
The introduction of Grok was accompanied by a statement from xAI, asserting that the chatbot is unafraid to tackle controversial or “spicy” questions that many other AI systems would refuse to engage with.
Elon Musk exemplified this with a post in which Grok responded to a user’s query for step-by-step instructions on how to make cocaine.
While Grok didn’t provide a recipe for the drug, it humorously addressed the question. In contrast, ChatGPT would typically respond with a straightforward refusal.
Currently, Grok is exclusively available to a limited group of verified X users who have signed up for xAI’s early access program.
It’s important to note that Grok is still in its early beta stage and has undergone training for only two months. The xAI team anticipates continuous improvements with each passing week.
When it becomes more widely accessible, the Grok AI assistant will be bundled as part of the X Premium membership, which is priced at $16 per month.
