Dhadhak is an adaptation of the Marathi phenomenal hit Sairat, which is the the highest-grossing film in the history of Marathi cinema.
Sairat – the love story of a Maratha girl from a powerful family and a boy from a fisherman’s family – had become a sensational hit.
Despite it being an adaptation, the director of the film Shashank Khaitan, has said that the premise of the Hindi version of the movie is different from the original.
The USP of the movie was how the actors – debutants Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar – wore their characters’ skin like their own, and were immensely believable as Archie and Prashya.
Sairat received a standing ovation at the Berlin international film festival, where it was India’s official entry.
The major draws of the film were the the chart-bursting music by Ajay-Atul and the untrained lead actors, Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar.
Dhadak may turn out to be a worthy adaptation of Sairat. ‘Dhadak’has been produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and directed by Shashank Khaitan.
The story is set in Rajasthan, which Bollywood equates to palaces, glorious sunsets in the desert, coulourful lehengas, jewellery and lots of “Rani saas” and “Raja saas”.
The main lead actors of Dhadak are star kids, veteran actor Sridevi’s daughter Jahnvi Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s brother Ishaan Khatter.
Janhvi said, “She was very technical about it. The first thing she told me was the things I needed to improve — she felt the mascara was smudged and it really bothered her. The second half has to be different, she told me… ‘You can’t wear anything on your face.’ That’s all she told me, but she was happy.”
Janhvi recently posted a throwback photo on her Instagram story, which seems to be at a party or function. In the photo, she is dressed as a joker. She captioned it, “Lesser known fact: I was Nolan’s first choice for The Joker, had to decline for Dhadak!”
Talking about Dhadak, the director Shashank Khaitan in an interview recently said: “The basic premise is of differences in caste, honour killing and what it means to survive in that world, and I feel that is the conflict that is alive all across India, you will hear stories like that. So in that sense, the basic premise (of Dhadak and Sairat) is same.”
Dhadak is co-produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. Dhadak is set to hit the screens on July 20.
