Since its inception in 2005, Reddit has become synonymous with both the best and worst aspects of the internet.
Unlike other social media platforms that emphasize personal connections or physical appearances, Reddit offers users the option to maintain anonymity while engaging with the online community.
While Reddit is not without its fair share of issues, it provides a platform for individuals to forge connections within various forums and focus on the substance of discussions rather than superficial attributes.
Particularly for users residing in heavily censored countries like China, Reddit offers a space to express opinions that would be censored on their usual social media platforms.
Nonetheless, despite the challenges of complete censorship, Reddit has a history of occasional temporary outages.
In May 2023, Reddit experienced a downtime incident attributed to an internal systems issue.
Although the matter was resolved after a few hours, Reddit’s team did not provide a comprehensive explanation for the outage, leaving users uncertain about the possibility of future occurrences.
If you are encountering difficulties accessing Reddit, here are some steps you can take to determine whether Reddit is experiencing downtime or if the issue lies with your own connection.

Conduct An Initial Evaluation
Before prematurely assuming that your preferred method of anonymous internet browsing has vanished into the abyss, it’s wise to conduct a brief evaluation. This involves assessing both your device and your overall internet connection.
To begin, if you’re accessing Reddit from your mobile phone, try switching between different web browsers and the official Reddit app.
If you notice that the problem only occurs within the app, consider updating it or clearing the cache to restore its functionality.
If Reddit remains inaccessible across all platforms, explore using alternative devices in your household, such as your computer or tablet.
Subsequently, determine whether Reddit is the sole platform causing difficulties or if you’re also unable to visit other websites or engage with various social media platforms.
If you encounter challenges accessing other platforms like Instagram or Twitter/X, the issue likely pertains to your own connection.
During this initial assessment, you can attempt to refresh the webpage, restart your device, or clear your cache.
Additionally, you can enlist someone nearby to verify access to Reddit and other platforms to corroborate your suspicions.
If multiple platforms are experiencing downtime, it may indicate a connectivity problem, and you should investigate the status of your internet connection. After all, being connected to Wi-Fi does not guarantee flawless internet access.

How To Check The Reddit Down Status
Powered by Atlassian, you have access to a live Reddit status website, providing you with the means to verify the operational status of Reddit’s infrastructure and media storage.
When the website is functioning as expected, you will observe a reassuring “All Systems Operational” message prominently displayed at the top of the screen, highlighted in vibrant green.
On the Reddit status page, you can also review the uptime statistics for the preceding 30 days, which offer insights into any component issues or significant partial outages.
Furthermore, you have the opportunity to delve into Reddit’s incident history, where you’ll find details regarding past occurrences such as instances of sluggishness, inaccurate user counts, and problems with the chat feature.
For those who seek more immediate notifications, Reddit provides the option to subscribe to website status updates through various channels, including email, Slack, Twitter/X, and more.
To set up this service, navigate to the Reddit status website and locate the “Subscribe to Updates” option in the upper right corner of the screen.
From there, choose your preferred notification channel and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

How To Check Dedicated Services
A convenient method to determine whether Reddit or any other website is currently experiencing issues is by utilizing a real-time third-party service, such as Downdetector by Ookla.
These services typically function in one of two ways: by aggregating online information and user reports or by relying on official communications from the companies themselves. To employ Downdetector by Ookla, follow these steps:
- Visit the Downdetector website.
- In the upper right corner of the screen, locate and click the search button.
- Type “Reddit” into the search bar and wait for the website to redirect you to the Reddit Downdetector page.
On the Downdetector Reddit page, you have the option to report any issues you may be encountering, peruse comments from other users, and check the status of Reddit in different countries.
For those who prefer to stay ahead of potential disruptions, Downdetector offers a mobile app, available on both Android and iOS platforms. This app enables you to monitor the status of various websites, not limited to Reddit.
With Downdetector, you’ll never need to second-guess whether the problem lies with you or if Reddit is experiencing difficulties.
