Newly crowned Miss World, 20-year-old Manushi Chhillar, broke the 16-year jinx for India at the Miss World pageant last week, and won the Miss World 2017 crown in Sanya, China, becoming the sixth Indian woman to win the prestigious title.

Yesterday, the diva addressed the Indian media for the first time since her victory. Manushi spoke at length on her future plans, especially with regard to her campaign to promote menstrual hygiene in the country.


When asked if she had Bollywood one her mind, she said, ”When I entered medical college, my father told me that the work of a doctor translates into actor because he or she also has to take care of he patient and his family. So, I am kind of doing both. This one year, I will be travelling across the world. We will be spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene. Bollywood, as of now is not on my mind.”

In the year ahead, she will be travelling abroad to participate in ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ projects along with co-participants at the Miss World pageant. “I am really excited that I will be visiting four continents this year and spreading awareness about menstrual hygiene.

Various campaigns advocating lower taxes on sanitary napkins have the beauty queen’s support. “Menstruation is a natural process and sanitary pads are a necessity. They should be available at a low cost. The good thing about my project was making sanitary pads available at low cost and I would like to take it forward,” said Chhillar


Talking about the idea of beauty, she added, ”This is not just about outer beauty. It is not just a beautiful face that wins the competition. It is one beautiful heart that is selected to represent beautiful faces.”

Addressing other women in the country chasing their dreams, Manushi advised, ”Never give up on your dreams. I feel fortunate that my parents supported me. To other women I want to say, don’t give up.”

Talking about the contributions she wants to make to her State, she said, ”I am very excited to go to Haryana and meet people, because they have been very kind. I would love to contribute to Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao Andolan.”
