Akshardham Temple is a Swaminarayan Temple Complex which displays periods of traditional Hindu and Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture.This temple was developed by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of the Bochasanwasi Shri AksharPurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, with the help 3000 volunteers and 7000 skilled craft workers. Constructed using Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble and having no support from steel or concrete, the center of the complex is 43 meters high, 96 meters wide and 109 meters long. There are 234 elaborately carved pillars, nine domes, and 20,000 murtis and statues of sadhus, devotees, and Acharyas. The plinth of the Complex has 148 elephant statues and weighs about 3000 tons. The walls of temple are covered with carved details of flora, fauna, dancers, musicians, and deities. Under the central dome lies an 11 foot long statue of Swaminarayan and other Gurus of the sect. Each murti is made of Panch Dhatu. Murtis of other Hindu deities including Sita Ram, Radha Krishna, Shiv Parvati, and Lakshmi Narayan also lie within the central dome. Apart from viewing large Temple complex visitors can also see exhibitions on incidents from the life of Swaminarayan and the history of India, an IMAX feature on the early life of Swaminarayan as the teenage yogi, a musical fountain on the message of the Upanishads, and large landscaped gardens.
Tourists can see exhibitions like SahajanandPradarshan which display incidents from Swaminarayan’s life with the help of Robotics, Dioramas, light and sound effects, dialogues, and music.NeelkanthDarshan is a theater which is Delhi’s first and only large format screen which shows a 40 minutes film about NeelkanthYatra which narrates a seven-year pilgrimage made by Swaminarayan made during his teenage years throughout India.SanskrutiViharis a 15 minutes Boat Ride using life size figures and robotics to showcaseday to day lifestyle in Vedic India, from family life to bazaars and teaching. There is also a Musical fountainshow representing the circle of life. This is performed in the YagnapurushKund which is India’s largest Step well having 2870 steps and 108 small shrines. The garden of India or the Bharat Upavan has lush manicured lawns, trees, shrubs and bronze sculptures of contributors to India’s culture and history including children, women, national figures, freedom fighters, and warriors of India. Visitors can also see beautiful structures like Yogi Hraday Kamal, Neelkanth Abhishek, Narayan Sarovar and PremvatiAhargruh. Akshardham temple complex holds the Guinness world recordas the World’s Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple.
