Anguri Bagh

Agra, India

Possibly watering down that which was the romantic soul of Shah Jehan, the Garden of Grapes or Anguri Baghas it is called, it played host to the entertainment as the principal square of the zenana apartments or the living area of the ladies of the royal court. Demarcating its boundaries one finds the Khas Mahal to its east and red sandstone arcades on the other three sides. Anguri Bagh is made up of a concrete platform with a fountain that it is seen centered over. The garden is, architecturally, divided into various subdivisions with elaborate geometric patterns. Being the recluse for all the women observing the strictest code of the purdah, it was built with the main purpose of being a world within a world for them.
