Kalinjar Fort

Chhatarpur, India

This Fort is currently in ruins, but makes for great sight-seeing nevertheless. It stands on an isolated flat hill in the Vindhya Range. There are a number of Temples and structures within (including a beautiful Shiva Temple), which represent the grandeur of architecture during the Chandela dynasty. It is also famous historically as it had a major role to play during the mutiny of 1857. The Kalinjar Fort was a major Fortress, proving to be a major vantage point in Central India.
In 1023, it was able to withstand the attack by the army of Mahmud of Ghazni. Emperor Sher Shah Suri was brutally wounded by shells bursting in the trenches of this Fort in the year 1545.
