This place is also referred to as the rice bowl of Kerala because of the immense yield of paddy crops. Kuttanad is situated at the centre of the backwaters. The rich crop also found here are banana, cassava and yam. This is the only place in the world where farming is done at 1.5 to 2 m below sea level. One of the most striking features lies in the inland waterways which flow above the level of the land.
