Lotus Temple

Also known as Bahai Temple, This temple has been built in the shape of a Lotus flower and is one of the seven temples in the world constructed by the followers of the Bahai faith which believes in the spiritual unity of Humankind. Built in 1986, this temple is open to people of all religion and faith. The Bahai laws emphasize that the spirit of the House of Worship must be such that it is a gathering place where people of all religions should be allowed to worship God without denominational restrictions. Lotus temple is composed of 27 marble petal structures arranged in clusters of three each to form nine sides. There is central hall of about 40 meters tall and can hold up to 2500 visitors at a time. There are nine doors which open into the central hall and also there are nine ponds surrounding the central hall. The entire complex is spread in 26 acres of land and has a very beautiful garden which looks spectacular in the evening when it is flood lit. The Lotus Temple is one of the most visited buildings in the world even surpassing that of Tajmahal and Eiffel tower. It has also won various architectural awards and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles have been written about it.
