Raj Ghat is a Place where,Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was cremated after his assassination on 31st January 1948. Located on the banks of River Yamuna this is the final resting place of the Mahatma. This memorial to Mahatma Gandhi was designed by an architect named Vanu G. Bhuta and is constructed in the shape of a large square platform laid with black marble and left open under the sky with an eternal flame burning perpetually in one corner to symbolize the eternity of this great leader.An inscription ‘Hey Ram’ is also inscribed on the Memorial which were the last words uttered by the Mahatma. Visitors can attend a commemorative ceremony dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi on every Friday and also go to the National Gandhi Museum dedicated to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi. Memorials of various other prominent Leaders are located around Raj Ghat area. The memorial of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indias first prime minister and prominent freedom fighter, known as Shantivan is located here. Vijay Ghat is the memorial of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Indira Gandhi, the only women prime minister of India, was laid to rest here after her assassination. Her memorial is known as Shakti Sthal. Memorial of Jagjivan Ram, known Samta Sthal, Memorial of Rajiv Gandhi known as Veer Bhumi, Memorial of ChoudharyCharan Singh known as KisanGhat and Memorials of Sanjay Gandhi, Giani Jail Singh, Shankardayalsharma, Devi Lal, I K Gujral and P V Narsimha Rao are all located near area around the Raj Ghat. Visitors come here in large numbers to pay respect to our great leaders.
