Sabalgarh Fort

Morena, India

This is a medieval fort built on a 100 feet high hillock and has a beautiful ”Bandh” behind it. The surrounding town is Sabalgarh (70 km from Morena). Sabalgarh was founded by a “Gurjar” called Sabal but the fort was constructed in 18th century A.D. by Gopal Singh, the Yaduvanshi Raja of Karoli. Later it was conquered by Sikarwar Rajputs but the Marathas re-conquered it and restored it to the ruler of Karoli. In 1795 AD Khande Rao captured it. A few years later, the fort came under the British and in 1809 it was incorporated in the kingdom of Scindia. The fort has 4 entrances and has a long series of bastions. Nawal Singh’s Haveli inside the fort is an example of Rajput architecture. At present the fort is in ruins and is said to be haunted!
