Sanchi is located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, north east of Bhopal. It has some of the most renowned ‘Stupas, world famous Buddhist relics. The most well known among these is the Great Stupa, built by Emperor Ashoka in 262 BC, constructed after he embraced the Buddhism religion. Along with the Khajuraho Temples, the Grand Stupa is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city, considered to be a major religious place, adopted Buddhism instead of Hinduism.
