Situated in RabindraBhavan on Ferozshah Road, this has the distinction of being the first Academy set up in India for Performing Arts like Drama, Music and Dance. This Academy was established as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Indian Government on 31st May 1952 and was inaugurated by First president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The academy functions as the apex body of the performing arts in the country to preserve and promote the vast cultural heritage of India expressed in music, dance and drama. It also works with governments and art academies in states and territories of the country to preserve and promote the art and culture of the states and the rural area. The academy has an Audio-Visual archive and a library having several audio/video tapes, photographs, films and vast collection of books on arts and culture. The SangeetNatakAkademi holds over 2,000 items relating to Performing Arts and large Heritage collection of over 600 Musical Instruments belonging to different states and regions of India. The academy gives recognition to the practicing artists in the form of awards and fellowships.The SangeetNatakAkademi Award is the highest national recognition which carries a purse money of Rs. 50,000/-, a shawl, and a tamrapatra. UstadBismillah Khan YuvaPuruskar is presented young artists for their talent in the fields of music, dance and drama. The academy also provides aid to various institutions across India to promote study,research and documentation of performing art.
