Shey Gompa also known as Shey Palace is situated on a hillock on Shey. This monastery was constructed in 1655 by King Deldan Namgyal, better known as Lhachen Palgyigon. He constructed this monastery in memory for his father, Singay Namgyal. This Monastery is well known for its giant copper and gilded gold statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and it claims to be the second largest statue in Ladakh, which is managed by the monks of Hemis monastery.
