When you think of video editing, you’ll often picture the big boys like Premiere, Avid, maybe even Final Cut Pro, but there are other apps you should definitely take a look at, some may even give those big boys a serious run for their money.
One such app is DaVinci Resolve. Since Blackmagic acquired the software, they’ve made some serious modifications to it, to the point that it can now be considered a strong contender for video editing, colour grading, special effects and sound mixing, for an extremely affordable price. And best of all, it works on your platform of choice, be it Mac, Windows or Linux.

Review: FinancesOnline
Shotcut is a free and open-source video editing and encoding software that is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux devices. The platform works with resolutions as high as 4K and has a broad format support which highlights its impressive capability. Although, the program is not as professionally and intuitively presented as its competitors, beneath its rough appearance lies a powerful program.
It’s an ideal solution for enthusiastic filmmakers thanks to its array of editing features and audio/video effects. It’s not the most beautiful software available, but you will find little or no culpability in its functionality. Some of the features that make Shotcut a top-notch editor include: Wide format support, multiple audio features, video effects, editing features, cross-platform and codec independent, display and monitoring, and hardware support.
5. Filmora
FIlmora allows you to import clips from your Mac’s hard drive, a camera, and even from social media accounts. It has a somewhat quirky interface, that may take some getting used to if you’ve used other video editors. But it has plenty to commend it including lots of effects, titling options, and audio controls. It’s neatest feature could be the lighting preset options that allows you to emulate the look of Game of Thrones, Star Wars, or House of Cards at the click of a button.
Review: TopTenReviews
Wondershare Filmora is simply elegant video editing software geared toward beginner, novice and casual users. Anyone can learn to use this software, regardless of their skill level, and the end results look and sound fantastic. 6. Lightworks
For over 25 years Lightworks editor has been at the forefront of film editing, having been used on many of the finest films in cinema history: The Wolf of Wall Street, LA Confidential, Pulp Fiction, Heat, Road to Perdition, Hugo, The King’s Speech and many more! Now with the release of Lightworks have created the complete video creative package so everyone can make video that stands out from the crowd. Whether you need to make video for social media, YouTube or for a 4K film project, Lightworks makes it all possible!
Review: Capterra
Pros: Lightworks takes the very complicated job of editing videos and makes it about as easy as it can be without sacrificing functionality. I tried several other packages and kept running into things they could not do. With Lightworks I had to work hard at researching and learning but I could always get the job done.
Cons: It’s hard to come up with something bad to say. The learning curve is a bit steep but I would not want them to dumb it down in any way!
I was unhappy with a lack of sync between the audio and video several times. It was all fine outside lightworks but when I imported it things got out of sync. I could fix it but I should not have had to.
7. OpenShot

OpenShot is a free video editing app for Windows, Mac or Linux, which is a major advantage to entice any budding, but cash-strapped editor.
The interface is pretty basic but offers everything you need from the standpoint of a video editing app. You can switch between the Simple and Advanced views depending on how much information you need to see on screen at any one time. On top of this, you can customise the interface to suit your needs.

9. Blender

Cycles is Blender’s built-in powerful unbiased path-tracer engine that offers stunning ultra-realistic rendering. Blender’s comprehensive array of modeling tools make creating, transforming and editing your models a breeze. “Probably the best tracker in the market”. Blender includes production ready camera and object tracking. Allowing you to import raw footage, track the footage, mask areas and see the camera movements live in your 3d scene. Eliminating the need to switch between programs.
Review: Capterra
Pros: The thing I like most if the ease of use after fully understanding what everything does. It looks intimidating and complicated if you’re a new user of blender, but after looking at a few tutorials of what you want to do in it, whether it be animation, character modeling, prop modeling, whatever it may be, it becomes easier to do and to understand. You do have to learn a little bit on your own, but as far as I have been using it, since 2015, I haven’t ran into anything I can’t do without a little bit of googling.
Cons: The thing I liked least about this software when starting out was, as I said in the pros, it is intimidating to look at when being a new user of the software. It stressed me out when I didn’t know where to begin, however, this was easy to get over with some googling and a little bit of tutorials that didn’t cost me a lot of time, for a big payout after I learned the software.
Overall: This is the 3D modeling program I use. I use it with a texturing software and a rendering software and sell my 3D models I make with it. It has helped me grow my business of making 3D props for game developers.
10. OBS
Video recording system that offers online video/audio capturing, filters for video sources, audio mixer, and more High-performance real time video/audio capturing and mixing. Create scenes made up of multiple sources including window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, capture cards and more. Set up an unlimited number of scenes you can switch between seamlessly via custom transitions.
Review: Capterra
Pros: The product is completely free, with no limitations. You can immediately start recording from multiple sources at once, with a fairly nice amount of customization in terms of the options you have. File formats, encoding, streaming, and so on. You can also create your own shortcuts to start streaming/recording. More functionalities are also available for users who need more control.
Cons: Shortcut seem not to always work on the first hit, and some users might find it difficult to use the more advanced functions. Sometimes records a blank screen when trying to record over videogames or other programs running in borderless fullscreen.
Overall: I use OBS almost on a daily basis for work, and even more often for personal purposes. At first I had some trouble setting it up, but after a few minutes it’s really straightforward. I can now record my entire screen in its original resolutions, with no watermarks, completely for free.
Pros: It’s an easy to use video editing software that lets you edit your video files in very short time, supports the most used video formats of the market and it lets you edit audio files as well.
Cons: No cons at the time I just installed this software and so far it works very good for what I need it for.
