1. Lead Acid Batteries
These batteries have been in use in off-grid energy systems for a long time. They are very affordable compared to the other types of solar batteries. However, they have some shortcomings. Lead acid batteries have a lower depth of discharge than most batteries.
This means that a high percentage of charge needs to be retained in the battery at all times. If this is not observed, the battery’s useful life will be shortened. Secondly, these batteries have a shorter lifespan than other batteries. However, despite these shortcomings, lead acid batteries are still a good solar storage option for homeowners.
2. Lithium Ion Batteries
Lithium ion batteries are the most commonly used solar storage option because of their great performance. They have a longer lifespan and higher depth of discharge than lead acid batteries.
They are also lighter and more compact compared to lead acid batteries. The only downside is that they are quite expensive compared to other types of batteries. However, they are definitely worth the investment as they will serve you well for a long time to come.
3. Saltwater Batteries

These batteries are relatively new in the market compared to lead acid batteries and lithium ion batteries. The first obvious advantage they have over the other two types of batteries is the fact that they do not contain heavy metals. Instead, they use saltwater electrolytes as the name suggests.
Special processes need to be followed when disposing of lead acid batteries and lithium ion batteries, but this is not the case with saltwater batteries. They can easily be recycled.
These batteries are cheaper than lithium ion batteries, but more expensive than lead acid batteries. They also have a higher depth of discharge compared to lithium ion batteries. Their lifespan is shorter than that of lithium ion batteries, but longer than that of lead acid batteries.
The fact that saltwater batteries are relatively new in the market means that they have not been tested as much as the other types of batteries. Therefore, not much can be said about their performance.
