The news came to light through an email sent by YouTube to its customers, as reported by The Verge. The email conveyed the message that as of October 25, 2023, the YouTube Premium Lite tier would no longer be available.
It further informed users that YouTube would be actively exploring and developing other versions of the Premium Lite subscription based on user feedback, hinting at the possibility of its return in a different form.
YouTube Premium Lite was initially introduced as a pilot program in 2021, primarily in European countries.
Priced at $6.99 per month, it offers ad-free video playback, making it a more cost-effective alternative to the standard YouTube Premium subscription, which costs $11.99 monthly.

However, it lacked some of the additional perks associated with the full Premium subscription, such as background playback, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, and access to YouTube Music.
This move by YouTube to discontinue Premium Lite raises questions about the availability of more affordable plans for users in regions like Europe and the United States, where the standard YouTube Premium subscription comes with a relatively higher price tag.
