Phuket Island is Thailand’s largest at 48km in length and 21km at its widest. It’s in Southern Thailand, on the west-facing Andaman Sea coastline, suspended from the southern tip of Phang Nga Province by a pair of short but substantial road bridges. A car from Phuket airport to Patong beach costs about 600 baht + 100 baht airport fee. As usual in Thailand, make sure your taxi driver turns on the meter when leaving.

1. Patong
Patong is a free-for-all and by far Phuket’s most notorious and divisive destination. Between the concrete, silicone and moral turpitude, almost anything is available for the right price and, while that’s true of other places in Thailand, Patong doesn’t try to hide it. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re going to like it; some people avoid this part of Phuket entirely.
2. Phuket Town
Long before flip-flops, glossy resorts and selfie sticks, Phuket was an island of rubber trees, tin mines and cash-hungry merchants. Luring entrepreneurs from the Arabian Peninsula, China, India and Portugal, Phuket Town became a colourful blend of cultural influences.
3. Rawai
Rawai is a delightful place to stay or live, which is why this laid-back stretch of Phuket’s south coast is teeming with retirees, artists and Thai and expat entrepreneurs, catered to by a booming service sector, countless relaxed, health-focused cafes and plenty of yoga and moo·ay tai (Thai boxing).
4. Kata Beach
Join this tour for a unique night dive experience in Phuket. This night dive has been designed for certified divers who are looking to experience Kata Beach House Reef at night. Straight from your hotel, be taken to the dive center to check out the equipment. After, head to the beach and begin your night dive experience directly from there.
The diving here is relaxed with a slight current to a maximum depth of around 10 meters. The perfect location for divers looking to make their first-night dive and for more experienced divers who simply enjoy night diving. Once your night diving experience is complete you will be taken back to the dive center for a rinse off before being transferred back to your hotel. Diving in small groups with a maximum of 4 people per guide.
5. Kamala
A chilled-out hybrid of grittier Karon and glitzier Surin, Kamala is home to a large Muslim population and lures in a mix of longer-term, low-key visitors, including families, retirees and young couples. The sweeping golden bay is magnificent and serene, with palms and pines mingling on its leafy, rocky northern end, where the water is rich emerald green and the snorkelling around the rock reef is halfway decent.
The entire beach is backed by a paved path and lush rolling hills, though development is creeping in. Flashy resorts are carved into Kamala’s southern bluffs, jet skis make an appearance, and the arrival of two glam new beach clubs at the northern end of the bay spells an upmarket swing in the area’s vibe – but for now at least, most of Kamala remains relatively laid-back by Phuket standards.
6. Karon
Hat Karon is like the love child of Hat Patong and Hat Kata: chilled-out and starry-eyed but a tad sleazy. Despite Karon’s large resorts, it still has more sand space per capita than Patong or Kata and remains popular with families. The further north you go the more beautiful the broad golden beach gets, culminating at the northernmost edge (accessible from a rutted road past the roundabout) where the water is like turquoise glass.
7. Nai Harn
Basking in views across Hat Nai Han and the aqua-waved Andaman, the luxurious, white-walled Nai Harn is one of Phuket’s oldest hotels, now reinvigorated with crisp, contemporary design. Rooms cascade down the hillside; most enjoy sea panoramas, some have colourful cabanas and mod soaking tubs. A stylish spa complements a wealth of bars and restaurants, including terrific seaside Rock Salt.
8. Nai Yang
The liveliest and most developed of Phuket’s three relaxed northern national-park beaches, this sandy blonde casuarina-shaded bay, 3km south of the airport, is sheltered by a reef that slopes 20m below the surface – which means good snorkelling in high season and fantastic kitesurfing during the monsoon. Behind is a strip of seafood restaurants, hotels and mellow bars.
