Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects ability to read, spell, write, and speak. Before the release of Aamir Khan’s, most of Indians were not aware of this disease. Recently, a Twitter user recalled how she helped out a school junior for 3-4 months during the zero periods, without actually knowing the condition of their junior.
1.
We had a zero period in my school where we could either catch up on our own work (read: do nothing) or we could volunteer to help younger students who were having a difficult time in class. When I was in 6th grade, I was assigned a 1st grader. He was really far behind.

2.
I was told that he had a “bad handwriting” and difficulty reading. So everyday, for and hour we would work on that. We would work on just 4-5 alphabets per day. We identified the problem areas and worked extra hard on them.

3.
I’d hold his hand and make him write the alphabets so he’d learn the motions or hand movement to write them. Wed repeat this 5-10 times and then he’d write it on his own. Wed revise what we did on the previos day so he remembered and did not get confused.

That would take 35-40 minutes and for the rest of the time, we’d sit in the corridor and practice reading. He could identify the letters better so his reading improved over time. He moody and reluctant when we first started but eventually he got into it & was a lot more receptive

3-4 months later, his class teacher thanked me for all the work I put in. She said that his handwriting was a lot more legible and he was reading a lot better, too. He also started doing his homework more diligently and it just made me really happy.

An year later, taare zameen par came out. I realised that the kid was probably dyslexic. It made me happy that the school tried to do something to help kids who were having a hard time rather than just dismiss it as them not being capable enough & that I could help out a little.

This is so heartwarming. You’re so nice. My heart is full. I’m also very surprised and happy to know that there are schools that actually care about students. This thread made my day ????

I wish I had you and I was a dyslexic , there was no one to help me out . I was singled out everyday in class for my math , handwriting and pretty much everything. I got someone like you and today I am pursuing a professional degree . All thanks to people like you ✨✨✨????

Back when peer-to-peer learning wasn’t just about advertising expensive schools. https://t.co/bUWipvDRvG

This is such a sweet story! I don’t know if you do anything in the education space as an adult, but it sounds like you’d be kickass at it. ????
