1. Comparison Of Starting Batteries And Deep-cycle Batteries

The make, model, and type of vehicle typically determines what type of battery you need. In general, there are two options available – deep cycle batteries and standard starting batteries. Here is the difference between the two.

  • Deep-cycle battery. This type of battery provides current in steady supply over a long period. You can charge and discharge a deep-cycle battery many times without damaging or decreasing its life cycle. Because of the more robust nature of this type of battery, it is generally used in industrial applications, such as in marine vehicles. It is also a suitable option in powering electronics and other plug-in accessories. There are also some dual-purpose models which can be used to start an engine. But before using a deep-cycle battery to start an engine, make sure that the CCA rating indicates it has enough power.
  • Starting battery. This type of battery produces a massive amount of energy within a short time; hence, it is used for starting engines. The battery then gets recharged using the alternator. Unlike a deep-cycle battery, a starting battery cannot withstand discharging and recharging cycles. Moreover, draining a starting battery will eventually shorten its life cycle.

Apart from the typical car battery, vehicle batteries have numerous other applications. They are used in marine vehicles, power sports equipment, agricultural equipment, trucks, and golf carts. Many retailers and manufacturers supply all types of batteries used in almost any kind of vehicular application.

2. Standard Terms Used In Evaluating Vehicle Batteries

  • Cranking amps. This measures the starting power of the battery. The vehicle manual usually designates what the cranking amp required to start the vehicle is.
  • Cold cranking amps. The starting power of a battery differs when subject to icy conditions. If you live in a colder climate, you need to carefully consider the cold cranking amps of the battery you are buying. When the temperature drops below freezing, a vehicle battery can only deliver up to 60% of its cranking amp.
  • Maintenance-free. Batteries today are mostly automatic where you no longer need to monitor the electrolytes and add distilled water.

Choosing the right battery for your vehicle is essential to its performance. If you are buying from an original equipment manufacturer, always check the warranty offered by the supplier. Always take into account the intended application for a vehicle, especially if it is meant for industrial or commercial use. Lastly, check the vehicle manual and specific requirements to finalize your battery choice.
