Review: Cnet

Much like Dyson brand vacuums, I had heard my fair share of iRobot hype before I began testing the Roomba 880. I even had visions of following in Tom Haverford’s footsteps and building a “DJ Roomba” of my very own.

Sadly, my dreams of channeling “Parks and Recreation” were dashed when I unboxed it and began testing instead. Fortunately, though, what I discovered was a clever little robot vacuum that came in first or second place in every single performance category.

2.  Hoover Air Cordless Series Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Hoover Air Cordless Series Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

We removed the cord but kept everything else. Finally, a full-size, cordless, cyclonic vacuum that can clean your whole home*. Two LithiumLife batteries provide an average of 50 minutes of fade-free power to clean both carpets and hard floors.

That’s enough to clean a 2,500 square foot home with no loss of suction** and without recharging. WindTunnel 3 technology allows you to clean deep with three nozzle channels of powerful suction to capture dirt — other vacuums rely on one.

The Air Cordless vacuum contains all the technology you’d expect to find in a Hoover upright, minus the cord. A simple change that changes everything. *With two LithiumLife batteries, get up to 2,500 square feet of carpet, hard-floor and above floor cleaning with removable wand. **Per IEC60312-1 1st Edition, Clause 5.9.

Review: Reviews

Our unanimous top pick was Hoover’s Air Cordless Lift for its excellent cleaning power and maneuverability. We were stunned that our only cordless model went straight to the top of the list.

Most agree that cordless models aren’t quite there yet in terms of power (Sir James Dyson bought a battery company in 2015, but even he said not to expect battery-operated Dysons “for a few years”), yet this little Hoover defies the trend. It’s everything you want in an upright, and there’s no cord to trip you up.

Review: THE STRATEGIST

“Wow, It’s better than what the TV info commercial said! We have four cats and a German Shepard. Even though the house looked clean, the Shark proved it wasn’t. No more moving fur and dust around. I ran the Shark though all sorts of tests. I was able to suck up the dust off of the furniture and fur off of the comforter and drapes.

It did a wonderful job on the bare floors. It took up all the dust and dander that my Orek and Kirby left behind. I didn’t have to wash the floor to remove the dust. It picked up all of the cat fur on the dining room chairs where they love to sleep. Worked wonders on the cat stands.

It sucked up the dust off of the computer and electronics in the house. I was surprised how much fur and dander came up from the carpets. Even my daughter remarked that after I was done cleaning the house smelled better — cleaner. I didn’t have the fly away dust in the air….that same dust that lands back on the furniture that makes double the work.”

The Bissell CleanView 9595A is our overall winner.

It sells for around $90 online and in stores. Our tests showed that the CleanView offered the perfect balance of performance and price. While this Bissell didn’t excel in any one test, it did well across the board. Other vacuums on our list are better suited for a certain type of household—say, pet owners—but the CleanView is a great generalist.

In our tests, we create a special dirt mixture that’s representative of the dust and debris that gets tracked through most households. Then, we embed it into a normal carpet—the same way your feet would push dirt into your carpets at home.

The CleanView picked up 43.5 percent of that dirt—which is about average. By comparison, the best vacuum we’ve ever tested only cleaned about 75 percent in a single pass.

Review: Cnet

The $199 Shark Rotator Pro Lift-Away vacuum cleaner really had a lot to prove at the outset of this review. It claims to “clean carpets better than the Dyson DC41” on the box. So I tested it against the $649 DC41 (and the $499 DC50 for good measure). To diversify a bit more, I also compared it to the $399 Oreck Touch and the $309 Electrolux Precision Brushroll Clean.

The $200 Shark is the least expensive of the five models and makes pretty lofty performance claims. So, is it really better than a Dyson? Well, yes and no. I would recommend it over either Dyson because it is a more well-rounded machine. It offers good design, usability, and performance, and it has excellent features. Both Dysons struggled in the design department, while the more expensive DC41 outperformed the Shark (on carpet and everywhere else) and the less expensive DC50 performed on par with the Shark.

And in comparison to the Oreck and the Electrolux, it’s much more a matter of preference. The Shark is a fantastic budget vacuum that holds its own against these two in usability and features, albeit with slightly lower performance marks. Still, I would highly recommend this vacuum. It offers the best value of any of the models and its multitude of accessories will delight the more

For a carpet-heavy home, the Oreck is a winner. It has massive cleaning power no matter how big or small the mess. That power comes with the sound to back it up: It roars at well past 85 decibels, the loudest of any vacuum we tested.

Other than the Hoover, it’s the only vacuum we evaluated with edge-cleaning bristles, which are supposed to help pick up debris close to the wall. But we’re not convinced these little whiskers do too much — the fact that two of our top picks have them is just a coincidence.

Review: THE STRATEGIST

“I threw a party for my 5- and 10-year-old. Fifteen kids, all under 10. For some reason, I thought popcorn and 18 pounds of kinetic sand were going to be a hit. Well, it was and holy cow the mess afterwards! Let me start off by saying, The suction power on this sucker is GODLY. Perfection.

It picked up that 18 pounds of kinetic sand and five bags of popcorn remnants off the entire top floor of my house like it was nobody’s business! I’m not exaggerating, you guys, I have never been so happy about a vacuum purchase in my damn LIFE.

It’s durable (kids tried using it as a jungle gym and it survived unscathed), it has a crazy good amount of suction, and it’s easier than cake to clean! If you’re looking for the gladiator of vacuums, the Hercules of household cleaners, here it is ladies and gentleman. This Bissell is worth every penny they list it for and more.”

Review: THE STRATEGIST

“We’ve been using this for over a year and it’s completely changed the way I clean our small house. I was set on getting a cordless stick vacuum and ended up changing my mind basically on a whim, and I’m so glad about this choice.

Before this we had a decent vacuum that was heavy and always smelled dusty because it was hard to clean, and I dreaded vacuuming. But this exceeded expectations, especially for the cost, and the first time we used it we were truly shocked at how much dust and pet hair our previous vacuum had missed.

Like, couldn’t decide whether it was amazing or horrifying. I really like the narrow profile and swivel for getting around furniture. It works really well on our hardwood floors as well as our carpet.”

Rounding out our list of the best affordable uprights is the Dirt Devil Power Pro. Retailing for around $50, the Pro Power is the most affordable of our affordable vacuums.

However, that low price comes at a cost: On average, the Dirt Devil was only able to get 20 percent of dirt out of a normal carpet. Its motor also made 86 dBa of noise—about the same as a blender—which made it the loudest vacuum we tested.

The Pro Power may have been the weakest performer, but it checks all the “I want to save money” boxes. It has a washable filter, it does not need replacement bags, and it fits in almost every budget. However, a vacuum is designed to clean your house. That’s why we recommend spending a little more to get a vacuum that won’t leave most dirt behind.
