Movie Review: MumbaiMirror

The essence of a taut revenge thriller is that it urges one to consider a turn of events which though improbable would be plausible under the circumstances. It also accounts for the limitations of the law and assembles facts in such an order that one cannot possibly construct an alternative theory.

This official remake of Oriol Paulo’s Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest) had the ingredients to deliver such a film. And while it manages to hold your attention and interest for the large part, the proceedings tend to occasionally get a bit too theatrical. A svelte, tailored woman Naina Sethi (Taapsee Pannu ) is accused of murdering a man she was allegedly having an affair with.

With compelling circumstantial evidence pinning her to the crime, her only hope is relying on legal shark Badal Gupta (Amitabh Bachchan ))— an attorney with an enviable record. When Gupta interrogates Sethi for the first time, he hopes to suss out the facts by turning over the events that led up to the crime.

But will Sethi reveal more than she has in her statement to the police? Or will Gupta manage to look beyond facts to devise a theory that absolves her of the alleged crime? These are questions that will keep you glued till the climax which packs a surprise twist.

BADLA is the story of a murder accused trying to prove her innocence. Naina Sethi (Taapsee Pannu) is a successful businesswoman in London and married with a daughter. Her life turns around when she’s accused of murdering her lover, Arjun Joseph (Tony Luke). All evidences are against Naina since she was the only one in the hotel room where Arjun was killed.

She claims a third person was present who carried out the murder and even hurt her on the forehead. But the preliminary investigations revealed that the room was locked from inside. Witnesses outside the room confirmed that nobody came out of the room. Naina’s lawyer Jimmy Punjabi (Manav Kaul) realises that it’s a tricky situation.

Hence he hires expert defence attorney Badal Gupta (Amitabh Bachchan) to ensure she doesn’t have to go to jail. Badal reaches the residence of Naina and he begins his own investigation.

Upon talking to Naina and insisting that she tell him the truth, a lot of skeletons tumble out of her closet. She reveals that the murder of Arjun has something to do with the disappearance of a young man from a small town of Aviemore named Sunny Kaur. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review: Deccan Chronicle

Sujoy Ghosh, who previously helmed suspense thrillers like Kahaani series and Te3n, is back with Badla – an official remake of Spanish thriller ‘Contratiempo’ – starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu.

Naina Sethi (Taapsee Pannu), is a young successful businesswoman with a perfect family. Naina’s seemingly perfect world collapses when she gets arrested for the murder of her secret lover Arjun Joseph (Tony Luke).

Her lawyer (Manav Kaul) hires prestigious defence attorney, Badal Gupta (Amitabh Bachchan) to defend her, and over the course of one evening, they work together to find out what actually happened. Is Naina really innocent?

Badla is that slow burner that at a first glance is a slow and almost boring film – but that after a while expands into this cleverly written thriller that takes unexpected turns.
