That is the beauty of building your own home. The design stage is one of the most crucial stages of building a home. If you get anything wrong here, it will be very difficult to correct it in the future. However, you can make small changes to the original design as the construction project goes on.
Whether you choose to design your home yourself or hire an architect to help you out, there are a few tips that will definitely come in handy during the design stage.
1. Start simple
Even if you do not know how to use design software, you can come up with your own unique design using just a pen and a paper. You can then get an architect to come up with a more elaborate plan for you. List all the features that you must have in your house. This way, your design team will have a good idea of what you want.
2. Consider your family’s unique needs
You want to end up with a house that meets your family’s unique needs and preferences. For instance, if you like having dinner in the kitchen as a family, then you should make sure your kitchen is big enough for this.
3. The lot
You want your home to have amazing curb appeal. Therefore, you should ensure that the design of your lot features in the plan. Are you going to have a fountain or any other unique feature in your lot? These are some of the things that make a home truly stand out from others in the neighborhood.
4. Design with the future in mind
My guess is you are building a home that you want to live in for a long time to come. Therefore, you need to take your future needs into account when designing your home.
Are you planning on having more kids? Or bringing your aging parents over to live with you at some point in the future? You need to account for all this in your house plan. You do not want the time to come only for you to realize that you are going to need a bigger house.
If you plan on doing any extensions in future, maybe because you do not have enough money right now, you should factor that into the plan so that you leave enough space for the extensions.
Your plumbing and electrical systems should also be able to meet both your current and future needs adequately. A good home builder will be able advise you on how to ensure that your home is future-proof.
5. Prioritize features
You might not be able to have all the features you want due to either budgetary constraints, or lack of enough space. Therefore, you need to prioritize them. Know the features you absolutely must have and those which you want but can do without.
This will help you avoid getting stressed and getting into unnecessary debt when you can easily do without some things.
