In the first quarter of 2018, 10.6 million tourists traveled to Mexico.

If you’re going to be one of the millions of tourists traveling to Mexico, there are some things you should know beforehand.

Mexico is blessed with so many amazing things that it’s hard to exhaust all in one trip. Discover useful things to know before traveling to Mexico here.

1. You’ll Be Relatively Safe, But Still Pay Attention

Mexico has had a reputation lately for not being one of the safest places to travel to. With the political climate between the United States and Mexico, you may want to check your travel advisories before heading over there.

However, many of the safety issues come from corruption within Mexico’s law enforcement and violence associated with gangs and drug trading.

However, most visitors to Mexico won’t have to deal with any of this, depending on what area of Mexico they go to. You can also always take a cruise to Mexico for the adventure of a lifetime.

Most of the tourist areas of Mexico thrive off of tourism, so they have more resources dedicated to making sure people are safe. However, you should still make sure you’re vigilant while you’re there.

2. Restroom Doors With an “M” Are For Ladies

When you go to the bathroom in Mexico, you should know that the doors marked with M are most likely for the ladies. That’s because the Spanish word for women is actually mujeres.

The Spanish word for men is hombres or caballeros. So gentlemen, make sure that you look for either a C or an H on the door before you go in.

3. Most Places Accept Credit Cards

Credit Card Fees

While you should still withdraw some money before traveling to Mexico, you will most likely be able to still use your credit card.

Even in most remote places in Mexico, you’ll find restaurants and shops that will still take your international credit card. You will most likely need your ID though.

Also, if you’re going to be using your credit card, make sure that you are aware of any international fees before you use it.

However, cash is still widely accepted in most places in Mexico, and it may be easier in some instances.

4. Don’t Lose the Paper Slip Customs Gives You

When you first get to Mexico, an immigration officer will give you back your stamped passport, but they’ll also put a slip of paper inside of it.

You need to make sure that you give them this slip back when you’re leaving Mexico, or otherwise they will charge you a fine.

5. Brush Up on Some Spanish

Lastly, you should make sure you brush up on some Spanish before you go.

While most tourist places have some English speakers, if you go outside of those areas, you may have a difficult time communicating with the locals.
