German photographer Sandra Bartocha took this image in Abruzzo National Park in Italy. She said: ‘The forests in the Abruzzo National Park are among the oldest and most pristine in Europe. A heavy storm had taken all the fall leaves very early in the year, leaving only the beechnuts at the tip of the branches of the European beech trees. Taken from a higher viewpoint on an opposite mountain, the trees formed a perfectly regular rhythm. The image was taken in twilight, which creates the bluish colour of the trunks in contrast to the glowing red-brown of the beechnuts’
