UK photographer Ross Hoddinott, who’s based in Cornwall, said of this image that he took in Somerset, Sailing Boat: ‘I try to avoid over-complicated compositions. It is tempting to be clever for the sake of it – including unnecessary or inappropriate foreground interest, or maybe cramming more into the frame than is needed. Sometimes it is better to simply trust your instincts – don’t overthink things. I waited for the mist to begin to clear, and the cormorant to stretch out its wings, before triggering the shutter’
