Within 35 minutes, the Coway AP-1512HH reduced airborne particulate pollution in a 200-square-foot New York City bedroom by as much as 99 percent. And though it’s rated for spaces of 360 square feet, when we tested it in a Los Angeles office more than four times larger, after just one hour it had cut particulate pollution by almost 70 percent.

At about $500 for five years of operation, including base price, replacement filters, and electricity, it’s also the most affordable purifier of its abilities that we’ve ever found. And the Coway maintains its exceptional performance over the long term: When we measured its performance using filters that had been in use 24/7 for more than a year, it still cleaned the air as well as it did with brand-new filters. Finally, its compact form, quiet operation, and display-shutoff feature make it especially well suited to bedrooms.

Do you have a big home? Not a problem with the Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large Room Air Purifier. This air purifier cleans up to 1100 sq. ft. every 30 minutes without filling your house with noise. In fact, the technology is twice as quiet as that of its key competitors, even on Turbo speed.

Like all high-quality air purifiers, the Alen BeatheSmart has a HEP-Pure filter that claims to capture 99 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. This combines with the device’s Laser Smart Sensor, which also detects airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, to effectively clean your air of dust, pollen, allergens, and dander.

No expense is spared in the design of the air purifier, either. The Air Quality Indicator Light always reflects the real-time purity of the room’s air in an easy-to-read display. Furthermore, it comes in 14 different colors and panels so you can always find one to match you home’s interior. This is a high-end device, coming in at $688.

3. Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier for Home, 3 Stage with Two Washable Pre-Filters

Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier for Home, 3 Stage with Two Washable Pre-Filters

Breathe and sleep easier thanks to Blue Pure 211+ air purifier. With a simple, user-friendly one-button control you can easily select from 3 different fan speeds all of which help to remove allergy causing pollutants and odors. The three-stage filtration process starts with a colorful, washable pre-filter which captures larger particles like dust and pet hair. The air then passes through both a particle and activated carbon filter which catches virtually every airborne contaminant down to a virus in size: pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, smoke, allergens and bacteria.

Get rid of everyday smells such as food and pet odors naturally without harsh chemicals that mask odors. Filtering air from all sides, millions of ultra-thin fibers of different layers make it less dense than ordinary filters resulting in less clogging, higher airflow and lower noise. In fact, on the lowest setting, the 211+ is described as whisper-silent.

This purifier is designed to fit into any room in your house with 2 different pre-filter colors included, blue and dark grey, and many other colors available to purchase separately. With certified results through independent testing from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), the Blue Pure 211+ has a clean air delivery rate of 350 cubic feet/minute meaning it will clean the air in a 540 sq. ft. room 5 times an hour.

The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ showed performance in our tests that actually exceeded that of the Coway, reducing particulates by more than 99 percent on both its high and medium “quiet” settings in the same 200-square-foot New York City bedroom.

It’s not our pick because it hasn’t proven the test of time like the Coway—the 211+ is a newer product, and an earlier test of a mechanically similar product from the same company revealed a significant degradation in performance after a year’s use, so we’ll continue testing through 2019 to see if our initial findings hold up.

The 211+ is also larger, slightly louder, and more expensive to buy and to operate for five years ($700 to $800) than the Coway, and it’s not as easy to move around the home. This said, our initial findings suggest that it’s an excellent purifier, with a clean, modern design (and five color options) that looks good in most spaces.

Review: Forbes

Compact enough to fit on your desk but powerful enough to remove 99.9 percent of dust, pollen, smoke, odor, mold spores and pet dander, the Levoit Compact Air Purifier is an excellent entry-level option. Rather than using a UV or ions to clean the air, the device features a three-stage filtration system. This comprises a pre-filter, a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. Three fan settings let you control the speed and volume of the purifier.

This air purifier was definitely designed for use in the bedroom. It features a soft optional night light with two brightness settings as well as a very quiet fan. It’s not out of place on your nightstand, either, with its white or black case and sleek design. While not as feature-filled as other air purifiers on this list and better suited to small rooms than large homes, you can find it on Amazon for the low price of $83.

6. Rabbit Air MinusA2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier

Rabbit Air MinusA2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier

At the opposite end of the spectrum, you’ll find the Rabbit Air MinusA2, priced at $550. This one comes with all the bells and whistles: a five-speed fan, a transition light sensor and the ability to cycle the air in a 815 sq. ft. room twice every hour. It also features six layers of filters, including an upgraded BioGS HEPA filter and a customizable filter with pet allergy, germ, toxin or odor defense.

This device looks more like a high-tech thermostat than a traditional air purifier; it’s designed to either stand alone or mount on the wall. While its modern design and thin case are discreet enough, the MinusA2 takes up a lot of real estate on your wall. You can personalize the screen with photos and pictures, though the MinusA2 would still look out of place anywhere but an ultra-modern space. It’s a good choice for consumers who are invested in upgrading their home with today’s most cutting-edge technology.

Review: TopTenReviews

The Rabbit Air MinusA2 is exceptionally quiet, making it easy to forget it’s in the room with you. However, the design of this air purifier demands that you show it off, as you can add customized panels to the front of it that feature artwork from famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt and Katsushika Hokusai. In addition to this unique and artistic design, the MinusA2 is great at cleaning the air in small rooms and has a number of unique features.

The MinusA2, according to AHAM’s room coverage formula, effectively cleans the air in rooms up to 300 square feet. You can increase the effectiveness of your air purifier by using it in smaller rooms; using it in larger rooms slows down its ability to remove pollutants from the air. The machine can produce over three air changes per hour, meaning all the air in the room filters through the purifier every 18 minutes or so. This makes the MinusA2 especially useful for those who suffer from allergies or other breathing-related issues.

Our budget pick, the Blue Pure 411, is only for small spaces, like bedrooms or offices—no more than 200 square feet, and preferably 150 or less. But in such spaces, it performs impressively, reducing particulates by more than 90 percent in 35 minutes in a New York City bedroom of 200 square feet (as well as the Coway performed on its quiet setting). It’s also attractive, with a simple cylindrical design and five color options, and compact, just 16½ inches tall and 7½ inches in diameter. At around $85 to purchase and less than $200, total, to run for five years (thanks to excellent energy efficiency and cheap replacement filters), it’s a solid choice for small spaces and tight budgets.

Review: Forbes

Quiet and Alexa-enabled, the GermGuardian 4-in-1 Full Room Air Purifier is a relatively more affordable fan that can compete with many of the features of brands like Philips and Dyson. Like the Philips, the GermGuardian will monitor your air and show you whether the quality is poor, moderate or good via a Light Ring on the front of the unit.

You can also pull up the accompanying GT app to see this information on more detail, as well as set alerts so that it notifies you when the air quality changes. The GermGuardian looks like any ordinary stand-up fan, so it probably isn’t winning any design competitions anytime soon. However, at a price point of $149 and with glowing Amazon reviews, it’s certainly worth your consideration.

Review: wirecutter

If you live in a problematic environment with high levels of both particulate and volatile organic compounds/molecular pollutants (such as near a farm where biocides are sprayed, a chemical/power plant, or a refinery), or if you are particularly sensitive to odors or other VOCs common in homes (like formaldehyde), we recommend the Austin Air HealthMate Standard HM-400. In our tests for odor/molecular removal, its 15-pound VOC filter bested all other air purifiers by a wide margin.

The Austin Air’s performance comes at a price, however: At about $1,500 over five years of use, it’s the most expensive machine we recommend. You could buy and run three of the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty or two of the Blue Pure 211+ for about the same cost, and if particulates alone are your concern, those will let you purify more rooms and a larger overall area.

Review: Gadgets360

Dyson officially entered India about a month ago, bringing its vacuum cleaners, hair dryer, and air purifiers. We had a very brief chance to try these products when the company held a demo day in Delhi in November last year, and we were particularly curious to see how the air purifiers would measure up in the real world.

This is a category that is extremely important in India today, and it’s also one that’s not easy to navigate. There’s a lot of jargon to unpack, and there are a lot of variables, so it’s not easy to find the best air purifier for your needs.
