Here are 5 takeaways: WhatsApp Upgrades Privacy

  • Advanced Privacy for Voice Messages
  • Limited Playback with “One-Time” Icon
  • Simple Creation Process
  • End-to-End Encryption
  • Global Rollout in Progress

WhatsApp is enhancing your message privacy with the introduction of a new feature that takes the concept of disappearing messages to the next level.

Following the success of its View Once feature for photos and videos introduced in 2021, WhatsApp is now extending this capability to voice messages. Similar to scenes from spy movies, these voice messages will self-destruct once they are played.

This update allows users to share sensitive information with confidence, ensuring that the recipient can only listen to the message once.

Whether you’re planning a surprise party or sharing confidential details, this feature adds an extra layer of privacy.

To create a View Once voice message, simply open an individual or group chat, tap the microphone, swipe up to lock the recording, tap and hold record, then select the View Once icon.

Once the icon turns green, you’re in View Once mode. Send the message, and it will be marked with a “one-time” icon, indicating its limited playability.

Despite being end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp acknowledges that there are potential workarounds.

For instance, Android’s native screen recorder can capture the audio, and reported messages will be sent to the WhatsApp team.

If you haven’t received the feature yet, don’t worry. WhatsApp assures that the global rollout of View Once for voice messages will happen in the coming days. Stay tuned for an even more private messaging experience!
