We hate a lot of things about summer. The heat, the sweating, and the giant ball of fire. But one thing that never stops bugging us (pun intended) is the constant infestation of household pests.
We all know that these do nothing except ruin the household aesthetic, spread diseases, and damage furniture and walls.
So we thought to prepare a list of the most common household pests and how to get rid of them, without an exterminator. So you can complete the job right at home!
1. Dealing With Household Ants
- Dangers They Pose: Ants aren’t very dangerous creatures. While some species can sting and bite, many are entirely harmless. But as such, these creatures are highly intelligent, and can create pretty elaborate ant farms that can ruin an entire wall.
- How to Get Rid Of Ants: Ants can be complicated to get rid of, but once the procedure is done right, there should be no worry whatsoever. Entry points should be sealed up using chalk or any type of filling. Most products such as cinnamon and spices will help to repel ants and any other creature.
2. Dealing With Bed Bugs
- Dangers They Pose: Bed bugs are extremely annoying. The bugs can leave bite marks all over, and can seriously irritate the skin. For others, just the thought of sleeping with a hundred bugs sounds gross, and that needs to be taken care of.
- How to Get Rid Of Bed Bugs: One of the easiest ways is to thoroughly clean the mattress, pillows, bed sheets, duvets, covers, and basically everything that a bed bug might live in. The items should be washed at the highest temperature and left to dry in the sun. The best thing to do with the mattress is to toss it or brush it.
3. Dealing With Fleas
- Dangers They Pose: Unlike other critters on this list, fleas pose a risk of disease. They spread viruses and microbes, and even become a major inconvenience. Fleas can usually be found in the fur coats of pets, or in carpets and rarely in human hair.
- How to Get Rid Of Fleas: One of the easiest ways to rid yourself of these fleas is to clean your pets. A tradition bubble bath will usually do the trick, and regular grooming of the pet is highly needed. Spray your pets with special flea repellant sprays that will prevent fleas from breeding.
4. Dealing With Flying Termites
- Dangers They Pose: Apart from the typical wood-eating that these termites like to do, a lot of them can actually disrupt the natural cleanliness and purity of the house. Many can pose inconveniences when they fly about the house.
- How to Get Rid Of Flying Termites: In order to get rid of flying termites, you need to install bug zappers all around the house, while another method is to spray orange oil in the areas that termite infestations are suspected. We personally love this method as it ensures that the termites remain controlled at the cheapest rates possible.
5. Dealing With Rats
- Dangers They Pose: Rats are a more major pest than the insects. Most commonly the dangers that they pose are diseases. We’ve all heard of the plague, but rats can also cause various other diseases including salmonella, typhus, HPS, and even meningitis.
- How to Get Rid Of Rats: One of the easiest methods is rat poison. However, many might resent this method, as it is an animal rights violation. The next best option is to set up traps, some of which can even be harmless! Bait the animal and catch it in a cage or a box, and dispose of them far away from your house.
6. Dealing With Cockroaches
- Dangers They Pose: Cockroaches pose a number of dangers, including the spread of diseases and irritating cockroach bites. They get inside the food and infect it, exposing humans to a number of diseases.
- How to Get Rid Of Cockroaches: Anti-cockroach creams and sprays are easily available in the market. More humane methods include baiting and capturing, and some may even prescribe removing all sources of water and food. This will ensure that the roaches never come back again for good!
