What Is Vivitrol

People with addiction require special treatment and care to help them overcome their condition. Some of those who suffer from addiction never even realize their situation is as troublesome as it is.

It is vital to make them aware and encourage them to seek treatment in an established healthcare facility but one of the biggest challenges is that they have to come to the realization that they need help or it will never work.

In Tennessee, there are a lot of individuals both young that are addicted to both hard and street prescription drugs. Vivitrol Tennessee is a program that these addicts can join to get assistance from qualified medical practitioners that understand the use of Vivitrol in treating addictions. What exactly is Vivitrol and how does it help addicts?

Vivitrol is a special drug that healthcare providers inject addicts with to control various types of addictions. It contains special receptor naltrexone that prevents drug users from feeling the highness effect that encourages them to use alcohol or other types of drugs like heroin.

In other words, it prevents relapse to alcohol and/or opioid dependence. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of this drug for this purpose in 2010.

Healthcare providers use this drug as part of the treatment of alcohol dependants and other addicts. This medication helps stop dependence on alcohol and opioids.

Before starting treatment, healthcare providers require addicts to avoid drinking or taking drugs at least for about two weeks or 14 days. This medication prevents the effects brought about by opioids such as heroin and other prescription pain medicines common with many street drug users.

Healthcare providers should be extra careful before administering this medication. While it is a prescription medication to slow down addiction and eventually help stop the condition, it can also have some serious negative effects on the users’ health.

First and foremost, a qualified physician must be the one to administer the injection. There are cases where patients develop severe site reactions from such injections. It can easily lead to tissue death, cases that can sometimes require surgery.

Doctors must take proper care to ensure that such instances do not happen as some could lead to death. If after the injection you develop redness, bruising, swelling, or constant pain at the point of injection, then call your doctor immediately.

The main component in Vivitrol is naltrexone. This component can cause hepatitis as well as liver damage. Before getting the injection, you need to inform your doctor if you have any conditions like consistent stomach aches, fatigue, dark urine if the whites of your eyes are yellowing, or any other condition that you may have.

This medication is, however, not a final or permanent cure for opioids or alcohol dependence. Keep in mind that sudden withdrawals from opioids can lead to serious health issues or even death.

Also, after treatment, the patient must stay away from opioids as much as possible. Using the same amount as those before treatment can also lead to death.

Patients must continue to receive care at home that includes counseling to ensure that they do not relapse. They can also join some clubs and societies where they attend specialized sessions to keep them in check.
