Blogging is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to market your business. While it was a popular way for travelers and chefs to showcase their various talents online, for example, blogging began to fall by the wayside and was in danger of declining in popularity.
Thankfully, there’s been a recent resurgence in blogs of all types, largely thanks to the marketing potential they hold and their ability to bump up rankings on Googles’ search results. But popularity doesn’t translate into simplicity.
Creating and maintaining a blog is a lot of work – way more than it seems at first glance – and many rookie bloggers make a lot of common errors that could easily be avoided with a little bit of planning and foresight – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start blogging.
Below we’ll take a look at some of the common mistake that most bloggers make.
1. Writing the same way you talk
This is actually a two-sided coin with problems on both sides. On the one hand, many bloggers make the mistake of writing in their speaking voice.
That is, they often write sentences as though they were saying them out loud. This isn’t inherently bad, but it can be pretty annoying and makes for tedious reading if you’re not careful.
The beauty of writing is that it allows you to pen an idea, give thought to it, and refine it to a point where it encapsulates your idea and expresses it articulately.
While writing conversationally and informally can certainly be encouraged, using large amounts of slang, colloquialisms, incorrect spelling and general texting-talk won’t do your blog posts any favors.
On the other side of the coin, stiff writing is extremely off-putting too. Put simply, it’s vital to find a happy medium between the two styles.
2. Not getting a personal domain
If there’s one thing that can make you look like an amateur from the get-go, it’s an a generic suffix like .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com at the end of your domain name. Not only does this look cheap and unprofessional, but it’s likely that you’re missing out on a ton of advantages that come with buying a domain name.

3. Thinking people care about you
Unless you’re an internet celebrity or an up-and-coming influencer, chances are that the people following you aren’t too interested in all the finer details of your day-to-day life. This might sound harsh, but it’s a truth worth keeping in mind when creating content.
The blog you write should serve a purpose and add value to your readers – it’s what keeps them coming back. Discussing your wife’s favorite lunch or the pictures your kids like to draw on a marketing blog isn’t exactly relevant and won’t grab your reader’s attention.
That’s not to say that personal topics don’t have a place in blogging – a personal touch can help illustrate the message of a blog post when it’s relevant.
So while it might feel gratifying to write about your personal life for the sake of it, try and keep the bigger picture in mind when doing so to ensure it serves a purpose.
