The Good The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a big, beautiful phone with top-tier specs including a massive battery and internal storage that starts at 128GB. The new S Pen doubles as a wireless remote for taking long-distance selfies.

The Bad It’s expensive and offers few real innovations over last year’s Note 8. The fingerprint reader is uncomfortably close to the camera.

Samsung is carrying over its camera prowess from the Galaxy S9 Plus to the Note 9, with low-light defeating and telephoto-zooming camera lenses on the back. This is one of the best camera phones you’ll be able to buy in 2018.

The S9 Plus gives you an idea of the photo quality you can expect from the Note 9, though Samsung has tweaked its software to improve on that quality. It automatically makes small, but meaningful differences to the white balance of images by recognizing what you’re shooting.

It was a clever idea when it debuted on the Galaxy S9, but it has always felt like more of a gimmick in actual use.

I think splitting the difference and sticking with an f/1.7 lens would still be a better choice overall. For instance, shooting at f/1.5 gives you lovely natural bokeh, but the camera doesn’t know this so if it’s bright it’ll stick to f/2.4 and you’ll get a fairly flat shot. In instances like this I’d go as far as to say the camera on the Note 8 was better.

I also don’t think that having that wide f/1.5 aperture – wider than any other phone on the market – makes it the best for low-light photos.

It’s very good, however I have produced clearer and more detailed night photos from the HTC U12 Plus and Huawei P20 Pro with its fantastic night mode.

The rumours of Apple releasing a truly budget phone in 2018 never materialised. Instead, we got the iPhone XR: this takes inspiration from the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max albeit with a few caveats.

There’s only one camera on the back, the stainless-steel rim has been swapped out for aluminium and LCD replaces OLED as the tech used in the screen.

For me, none of the sacrifices really effect the quality of the device. In fact, this is the best all-around iPhone you can buy right now.

Unlike the other reviewer (who posted negative reviews on B&H and Amazon) I will tell you honestly that this is a quality phone with five good, working cameras.

If all of the cameras were blurry as he says, this issue would be all over Reddit and the tech sites. It’s far more logical to believe that the reviewer is upset he dropped his phone, tried to take pictures though cracked lenses, then chose to lash out at LG because he couldn’t return the phone and blamed them for his own stupidity.

Is this phone worth $949 or more? No. But if you buy it for $749, it is a solid flagship with decent cameras and a headphone jack. Definitely recommended at a lower price point.

I did some research on affordable but high quality Android phones, and this one was highly recommended.

It arrived in a sealed, obviously new box and the fact I was able to find a new phone for the price is truly remarkable. I experienced no difficulty activating it on my GSM network.

It runs smoothly and isn’t slow, the battery lasts awhile and I’m thrilled the back is plastic and therefore more durable than fragile glass backing.

The dual camera is nice to have, but I haven’t noticed it being any higher quality than my previous one-back-camera phones.

I LOVE the location of the finger print sensor, it’s convenient and easily accessible. The turbo charger is amazing, but I still use my 10ft much slower cable for convenience unless I need to charge it quickly.

There are a few things I absolutely hate about this phone, but for the overall price and performance, it’s not enough to remove more than one star from the rating.

I wrongly assumed that while it’s obviously not a Samsung, that Motorola would still have its own set of applications such as music and a photo gallery. It comes with Google music and Google gallery, and I detest both of them and have since found replacements.

The Moto G6 Play is a cheaper alternative to the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus. It trades away advanced features like 1080p resolution and a glass back to knock the SIM-free price down to a level budget buyer will be more comfortable with.

What do you lose? The Motorola Moto G6 Play doesn’t take great photos at night and the fingerprint scanner is slower than most. However, it’s still stunning value and is also one of the best-looking phones in this class.

The Galaxy S9 Plus one-ups the excellent Galaxy S9 with a second rear camera for taking portrait photos.

The Bad

Battery life fell short of last year’s model in our early tests, and the Galaxy S9 Plus suffers from the same underbaked extras as the smaller Galaxy S9. The dual-aperture camera tends to overexpose low-light photos in auto mode.

I am just leaving a review on whether the phone is unlocked or not. You can get reviews on the actual device all over the internet.

But, I assure you when this phone is sold directly from Amazon, it is unlocked. You do not have to use the Simple Mobile SIM/service that is included. I successfully used my AT&T SIM card. I can’t guarantee it will work on CDMA since I don’t have a CDMA SIM to test.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is, as you’d expect it to be, a bigger version of the Galaxy S9. It has a larger screen and a bigger battery than its smaller sibling, and (inevitably) a significantly higher price. It’s a familiar formula you can see repeated across the mobile industry. Bigger phone, more feature = higher price.

The trouble is that, last year, that’s where the differences ended between the two Galaxy S8 phones and I was reluctant to recommend the Plus. This year, the gap has widened and there’s more to differentiate the two.

That’s because Samsung has finally added dual-camera capability to one of its mainstream flagship phones and the result is that the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus now has a lot more to recommend it.

Yes, the iPhone XS is the best phone Apple’s ever created, but that’s not really a surprise – it’s the new one.

The bigger question is: what’s actually changed, given the design is so similar to last year? Well, the speakers are more powerful and ‘wider’ in sound, the camera has been enhanced with Smart HDR, the battery management is better and the chipset is far more powerful inside.

These are all just tweaks though, and it’s smart from Apple to remove the iPhone X from sale, as that would be a far more attractive option this year.
