I hadn’t ran in 10 years but the continued to call me even after several severe ankle injuries, reconstructive surgery on my ankle, and a meniscus repair.

All injuries were after I stopped running. We received a local 5k flyer in the mail and my daughter and I decided we were doing this together.

Since I had not ran or worked out in many years I needed a way to motivate myself, track my progress, and allow me to customize my workout regime in preparation for this 5k. I found this app recommended through a blog on the None to Run plan.

2. Calorie Counter – MyFitnessPal

I use the app primarily for tracking my meals and keeping track of calories. For that, it’s pretty good. I use a fitness tracker that’s not partnered with them though, so I can’t actually log my steps manually without having to go some roundabout way.

I think the app overall would be better if you could use whatever tracker you have instead of one of the expensive fitbits or garmin trackers.

3. Aaptiv

Aaptiv lets you workout when you want, where you want, the way you want. Get unlimited access to audio-based fitness classes led by certified personal trainers. Find the perfect rhythm with a playlist of music you already know and love.

I love this App! I’ve been working out for 30 plus years and thought i’d done just about everything there is. My daughter told me about it so I tried.

I started off using it on my runs and it has been amazing! It has definitely made me a better runner, increased my time and my endurance. I start off my day using it to run.

Some days on the Treadmill and some days outside. Then at lunch, I use it at the gym. First on the stair stepper or treadmill.

Then I alternate using it for core, upper body, lower body and stretching!! I’m obsessed. Working out as long as I have, it had gotten stale. With this Aaptiv, I look forward to my workouts again.

4. Nike Training Club

Looove the workouts, great variety, interface, all you need to get or stay in shape, really. The app, however, could use just a few tiny adjustments:

  • When doing a rep-based strength workout, you check each exercise complete when you are done. However – there are 30 sec, 60 sec rests thrown in as well, and the cool down is usually time-based as well. It would be incredibly helpful if these portions would get marked complete when the time runs out. So that I don’t have to check my phone every few seconds when laying on my back and doing a stretch.
  • The instructions/music volume disparities.. still can’t quite get what is up with that. If I simply play music through the music app on iPhone, then open NTC and start a workout, instructions are slightly louder so that works out great. If I play music directly through the app, however, it seems to be the same volume as the instructions therefore I cannot hear what I’m supposed to do – or when the timer runs out – so it’s a total mess.

5. UP – Smart Coach for Health

Lose weight, track calories, and sleep better than ever. The app learns your habits over time to give you tailored advice so you can make smarter choices and reach your goals faster. Pair the UP® App with Jawbone trackers to enjoy advanced features like automatic workout detection, sleep tracking, and heart health monitoring—or use it with your phone for free! Voted best fitness app by The Verge.

I had to change my positive review of the app I left last year. I am experiencing the same issues one of the reviewers here, I believe Subhankar Ghosh has. The app is paired with the band, it seems to be working, but nothing shows. None of my steps! Can you please explain why this is happening? Is UP not providing support anymore?

5 stars for the convenience of being able to see all the classes available and for great classes and instructors. 1 star for the rigid payment policies that don’t give customers a second chance. I have downloaded and tried multiple free trial services, got charged but manage to get a full refund back easily cause I didn’t use the services. For class pass, they don’t even send you a notification or email reminder and instead just charge you and don’t give full refunds at all.

7. Strava Running and Cycling App

Strava

Track your fitness with Strava activity tracker. Record routes, map your favorite bike trail or run & analyze your training with all the stats – for free!

Marathon training or simply love going for a bike ride? Turn your phone into a sophisticated cycle or running tracker with Strava. Try out a new trail with Strava distance tracker and mile counter or even track running speed. Join millions of active people and reach your goals!

I tried Strava a few years ago and didn’t love it. I’ve used several running apps over the years. The one I have used consistently over the last 4 years has been Runkeeper.

I have a few friends on Strava and I thought I’d try it again because I like the social aspect of sharing with friends.

Strava has a lot of nice data and it seems that their paid service revolves more around training plans rather than focused on just giving you more data. This makes sense to me. I really want to like this app!

8. Yoga Studio: Mind & Body App

Yoga Studio: Mind & Body App

Turn your living room into your studio with Yoga Studio! Play, create, customize and schedule easy-to-follow hd video yoga classes with full teacher commentary. View classes anytime, anywhere – no internet needed after downloading for easy access – Plus Play classes on your TV with Chromecast!

The app is clearly organized and lets you create your own routines from a library of poses.

I’ve been a long-time user of this app. As someone who makes very, very little, the one time low price made yoga accessible for me. Then came Gaiam, and I felt like, oh no. Here comes this bigger company to squeeze everything they can out of a humble little app. BUT after using this app for a while, I have been very pleased! I do get to keep what I had originally downloaded before by clicking “restore purchases”. And I do like that more and more practices keep getting added.

9. Fitocracy

Fitocracy motivates you and helps you succeed at fitness and level up in real life. We make exercise fun! Track your workouts, earn points, unlock achievements, beat quests, and slay the laziness dragon. Join the best fitness community on the planet and become the person you were meant to be.

Muscle-bound barbarians and athletic amazons are MMORPG staples, but the players themselves are more often associated with pizza, sugary soft drinks and expanding waistlines. Fitocracy aims to turn that stereotype around by applying MMO-style quests and achievements to real life. Instead of levelling up a character, the game encourages you to level up yourself by rewarding your real-world fitness activities.

Parts social network, parts RPG, there are elements of Twitter and Facebook in the status posts, workout logs and the system for giving props to other users’ workouts. Superficial though they seem, it’s really rewarding when you realise that other users have recognised your hard work.

10. 8fit Workouts & Meal Planner

8fit Workouts & Meal Planner

8fit helps you become healthier and happier by putting fitness and nutrition experts in your pocket. Get customized workout and meal plans to help you reach your wellness goals.

Review: iTunes

I love how customizable the meals and workouts are – especially the meals. I have tons of food allergies, plus the need to eat vegetarian two days a week. 8fit is the ONLY app I’ve seen that allows me to customize to this level, and I love it! I would rate it 5 stars if it weren’t for the shopping list. I tried it only once, because it dropped 3 of the meals (they didn’t show up at all on the shopping list). Plus, when I got home, some of the ingredients I had bought didn’t seem to appear in any of the recipes I had chosen.

11. Cyclemeter GPS

Cyclemeter

Cyclemeter is the most advanced application for cyclists ever designed for a mobile device. Built from the ground up for mobile, it makes your phone a powerful fitness computer — with maps, graphs, splits, intervals, laps, announcements, zones, training plans and more.

Review: PCmag

Pros
Amazingly rich with features. Tracks not just cycling, but running, walking, skiing, and other sports. Great graph output. Available in five languages.

Cons
Only available for iPhone. No prompt during set up to add age, weight, or sex to calculate calorie burn, although the feature does exist.

Bottom Line
Bicycle tracking app Cyclemeter (for iPhone) collects a wealth of data, is very accurate, contains several well thought-out features, and appeals to fitness enthusiasts who participate in more than one sport, which is why it’s our Editors’ Choice.

12. Under Armour Record

Under Armour Record

UA Record™ is the world’s first 24/7 connected health and fitness system. Track sleep, fitness, activity and nutrition. Set and reach goals, connect and sync devices, and follow friends and UA athletes. Get personalized insights to help you feel, look, and perform better.

Review: TrustedReviews

The Under Armour HealthBox aims to be an all-encompassing package that can track and record every aspect of your fitness and health. The product is designed for people looking to improve their overall fitness, or hit new personal bests by being able to monitor the multiple facets of their training regime and seeing how this correlates with performance. However, issues with its basic design and tracking accuracy make it a poor choice for people in its target market.

13. Argus

Easy to understand, easy to enter data. One star less because it doesn’t remember the food details I previously entered which force me to enter same details manually again.

14. Spotify

well i got my due date for my payment but i had not enough funds so a fews days layer i loaded my card up then i read that spotify would automatically try to take the payment again after a few days so.

I waited but then my subscription has been suspented since “i had not payed yet”so this confused me but I just re-entered my card details and got my premium back but my playlists where not downloaded so it was a hassle to get them back but it was ok great app overall.

15. Fitbod

Fitbod

My foundation is in starting strength barbell strength training and I then do accessory work for bodybuilding. Currently, push/pull/legs split.

This app has all the exercises a beginner, intermediate, and advanced lifter could ask for. I’m sure with updates and customer reviews they will add more exercises to the library.

It’s great for calculating volume and calorie burn. Notably, the calorie burn can be worked into your daily diet and calorie count so you can factor your workouts into bulk or cut routines.
