The longtime president of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, Sonny Barger, who died at the age of 83, was the epitome of outlaw biker.
It was something he earned, but it was also the image he cultivated for his charisma and cleverness that made Hells Angels a global brand.
Law enforcement saw the Angels as a gang rather than a club, but in the 1960s the media sided with the Burger (pronounced bar-gurr), promoting the outlaw image to the world as a form of counterculture protest, It was assumed that it was made into a movie in the form of celluloid as Easy Rider (1969).

Sonny Barger was born on 8th October, 1938, in Modesto, California. He helped to found the Oakland, California chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in the year 1957.
Before that, he was a member of the Oakland Panthers Motorcycle Club. Sonny became the National President of the Hells Angels a year after the former leader went to prison. Under his leadership, dozens of Angels chapters were merged into his one united club.

Sonny Barger Married Life
Sonny Berger has been married four times. He first married Elsie Mae, who died of a blood embolism on February 1, 1967. Later he married Sharon Glurke.

Throat Cancer And Retirement
In 1983 Berger was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. His vocal cords were removed and he learned to speak through an esophageal vocalizer.
In 1987, he was again arrested in California on federal drug and arms trafficking conspiracy charges but tried in Louisville, Kentucky, for supplying explosives to destroy an outlaw motorcycle gang in a territorial dispute.
He was convicted and served three and a half years of his four-year sentence. He claimed to have been captured by the FBI.
Berger retired from public leadership of the Angels and lived in Arizona in 1998. He divorced Sharon and married Beth Noel (née Black). They divorced after a domestic argument in which she was hospitalized with broken ribs and a torn spleen.
As the war between gangs escalated, he attempted to organize a peace conference at his Laughlin River rally in Nevada in 2002, but the Hells did not allow him to fight the Angels and Mongols. He had three fatalities and the meeting was canceled.
He sold a variety of Sonny Barger merchandise, including his salsa, and began writing books, including the biography Hells Angel (2001), written with twin brothers Keith and Kent Zimmerman.
He also wrote the Zimmerman and Biker memoirs and his two novels about a biker named Patch Kincaid. One of them, Dead in Five Heartbeats, was made into a film in 2013 and co-written with his fourth wife, Zorana (née Kazakian). They both played small roles in it.
Sonny Barger War Against Outlaws
Barger sent a stolen copy of a government document prepared by the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC), which contained the identities and personal information of Outlaws members and associates, by express mail to Webb’s sister in Louisville, Kentucky, who then forwarded it to members of the Hells Angels.
He also showed another copy of the EPIC manual and explained how to use it to fellow Hells Angels at the Oakland chapter meeting. When another chapter member suggested calling the Outlaws to ask if Webb’s killing was an isolated incident, Barger replied, “Call them to pick and choose.”
He lent the EPIC manual to Tait to copy after Anchorage chapter president Edwin Hubert, who also expressed retaliatory sentiment after Webb’s killing, instructed Tait to obtain a copy of the manual in September 1986.
When Tait informed Barger in a telephone interview that the FBI had Barger examine the package, sent Webb’s sister suggested an alibi that the package contained sympathy cards.
Barger also circulated a photo of the two outlaws who killed Webb, first at the Oakland chapter meeting on November 30, 1986, and again at the West Coast chapter officers’ summit on January 3, 1987.
He and Tate discussed retaliation against the outlaws on several occasions, and Tate encouraged Berger to travel to Alaska to advise the Anchorage Hells Angels chapter on retaliation.
Sonny Barger Imprisonment
On March 16, 1973, Barger was sentenced to ten years to life in prison after being convicted of possession of narcotics for sale (37 grams of heroin) and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. His future wife, Sharon, was a co-defendant; her case ended in controversy when the jury failed to reach a verdict.
As a result of his incarceration, Barger was forced to relinquish his presidency of the Oakland Chapter for the first time since its founding. According to police intelligence reports, he designated San Jose Chapter President Fillmore Cross as his international successor during a motorcycle ride at Bass Lake before his incarceration.
Cross was also imprisoned for possession of amphetamines in 1975, and Barger allegedly continued to lead the Hells Angels from his cell at Folsom State Prison. During his incarceration, the biker magazine ran a “Free Sonny Barger” campaign that sold T-shirts and bumper stickers to help pay his legal costs.
Barger gave numerous interviews, including one with Gerald Rivera for his television program Good Night America, in which he portrayed himself as a model inmate, saying, “Sometimes they had to let me go”
He also began studying sociology. in Folsom. In April 1977, Barger won an appeal to face a new trial on a previous marijuana possession conviction.
His acquittal, in that case, made him eligible for parole because the California Supreme Court ruled that the five-year waiting period—attached to his sentence due to a prior marijuana conviction—was unconstitutional. He was paroled on 3 November 1977 after serving four and a half years of his sentence.
