When you need to appoint someone to do some electrical contracting work for your business premises it is clearly important that you manage to pick someone who is competent and qualified and does your work to a high professional standard.
Commercial electrical work often involves a project that is larger and more complex than basic domestic assignments and that means you want to find a contractor who has past experience of this type of work and won’t be fazed by the scale of the task.
Here are some suggestions on how to pick the best electrician for the job.
1. Check Their Credentials
You would hope that your chosen contractor would have purchased their electrician insurance online and got all of their qualifications and licenses in place, but you should check that this is the case.
As part of the selection process and when you are reviewing quotes from electricians bidding for the work make sure you also ask to see copies of their insurance coverage and qualifications.
The scope of their insurance also matters as you want to know that their bond covers you if something goes wrong.
2. Get Referrals
Shortlisting a number of electricians and inviting bids can be a challenging process if you don’t know much about the electrical contractors you have approached.
A good way of avoiding that difficult scenario is to ask around amongst your network of friends and business contacts to see if they can suggest the name of an electrician that they are happy to recommend.
Be mindful that it is fairly straightforward to put some references on a website and claim to be the best electrician around. That might be the case, but you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for contact details so that you can actually speak to someone who will verify their suitability and professionalism.
3. Can Your Electrician Become Part Of A-Team?
As already outlined, commercial electrical work is far more in-depth and requires a level of technical knowledge that comes with experience.
As well as checking that they have worked on commercial projects before you will also want to know that they have worked with a construction team previously.
This is highly relevant as several trades often have to work in unison to see a project through.
4. Good Communication Is Key
Another aspect of their suitability that needs to be confirmed is whether they have a reputation for good communication.
You will want to appoint an electrical contractor who is good at communication and teamwork as you will often need a team ethic that everybody is on board with.
When checking out references ask about the electrician’s communication skills.
5. Look For Someone Who Strives To Be Better
A good clue when looking for this attribute in your electrician is to see whether they have achieved further accreditation and taken more training courses that would be required for basic qualification.
The theory would be that someone who is highly-trained and seems to be striving to be the best in their field is more likely to want to complete your work to the highest standard.
If you find someone that manages to tick all of those important boxes it should improve your chances of finding the right commercial electrician for the job.
