Melania Trump knows how to dress for a society event, a White House fête, or a photoshoot, but a national disaster? Some say, not so much. At least not on the first try.

After watching the progress of Hurricane Harvey safely from the presidential retreat of Camp David, President Donald Trump and the First Lady have departed the Maryland compound for a visit to Texas and Melania picked a rather bizarre outfit for the occasion.

While Trump wore chinos, a white button-down shirt, and a windbreaker jacket, his wife looked more prepared for a Top Gun-inspired fashion shoot in her black slacks, green bomber jacket, and stiletto heels, which Americans were quick to mock on Twitter – and which she subsequently changed out of before reaching her final destination in Texas.

While the internet had no issues with her jacket and trousers, she came under major scrutiny for her footwear.

The former model is usually seen wearing heels during public appearances Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin are her go-to designers but journalists had a field day with her shoes this time around. Many called out the first lady for her choice of footwear as she visits a city submerged in floodwaters.

She also wore a black top and pants layered with an army-green bomber jacket

Melania stepped off Air Force One in Texas, she was seen modeling a very different look – although she kept the same black ankle-length pants and the aviator-style shades

Despite traveling to areas of the country that have been ravaged by the horrific storm, Melania still ensured that she looked perfectly pampered, and wore a full face of make-up for the occasion
