Early Life And Professional Beginnings
Jerry Mathers was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1948 and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. He has three siblings including his younger sister and his two brothers.
When he was two years old, he started his career by appearing in department store advertisements as a child model. He then starred in a commercial for Pet His Milk and co-starred with Edwin on the variety show.
When he was four years old, Mathers appeared in a western comedy film. Shortly thereafter, he landed roles in films like This Is My Love with Linda Darnell and Dan Duryea.
“Seven Little Foy” with Bob Hope and in Alfred Hitchcock’s dark comedy The Trouble with Harry, he played a boy who finds a dead body near his home. He also appeared in the crime thriller The Shadow on the Window, portraying a traumatized boy who witnesses his mother being terrorized.
Leave It To Beaver
In 1957, Mathers scored his breakthrough role in Leave It to Beaver, a suburban couple. He reportedly got the part after Mathers reportedly told the show’s producers that he’d rather attend a club scout meeting than audition, and the producers were won over by his candor.
Mathers played the character in all 234 episodes of the series over six years. He was the first child actor to sign a contract to receive a portion of merchandising income from a TV show.
“It’s All About Beaver” continues to be a hit, airing in more than 80 countries in 40 languages. Mathers was also friends with Barbara Billingsley, who played her mother on the show.
Education And Military Service
After becoming a teenager, Mathers temporarily quit acting to focus on his studies. He attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, where he was the leader of a musical band called the Beaver and the Trappers.
In 1966, while still in school, he joined the United States Air Force Reserve. After he graduated, he continued to serve, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant. He then went on to the University of California, Berkeley in 1973, where he graduated with a BA in Philosophy.

Mathers returned to acting in 1978 after he worked as a loan officer and property developer for Commercial Bank.
That year, he appeared in an episode of the television series Flying High and co-starred with former Leave It to Beaver cast mate Tony Dow in the Kansas City-produced play “Boeing, Boeing”. Mathers then toured with Dow for a year and a half in Stanley’s production of So Long Stanley.
He was his jockey for the disc in Anaheim, California in 1981 and also appeared in his fantasy films “The Girl, the Gold Watch and Dynamite” starring Philip McHale and Lee Purcell.
Mathers reprised his role as Beaver in the 1983 television reunion film Still the Beaver, featuring most of the original cast.
Due to the film’s success, a new series was created around Beaver, aired on Disney Channel in 1984, he was later picked up by TBS and Broadcast Syndication.
Retitled The New Leave it to Beaver, the series ran for 101 episodes and ended in 1989. During this time, Mathers also appeared as Beaver in his episode of The Love Boat.
In 2001, Mathers participated in a special episode of the game show The Weakest Link called Child TV Stars Edition.
He was voted out after the first round. In 2007, he made his Broadway debut in his Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray.

Mathers first married in 1974 to Diana Pratt, whom he met during college. The couple divorced in 1981. Mathers then married Rhonda Gering, whom they met while touring at Stanley’s So Long.
They had three children Noah, Mercedes, and Gretchen. The two divorced in 1997. Mathers got married for the third time in 2011, this time to Teresa Modnick.
In 1996, Mathers was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He enrolled in Jenny Craig’s weight loss program the following year and eventually, he lost over 40 pounds. As a result, he became the brand’s first male spokesperson.
In 2009, he became the National Spokesperson for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and its Partnership for Formulary Assistance Program.
