His father Marion Barber Jr. and brother Dominic Barber also played in the NFL.

Barber attended Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota, where he excelled in football, baseball, and track.

In football, he was a senior, and a defensive super prep and prep star he’s an All-Midwest and Consensus All-State winner. In his final season with the Trojans, he led the team with 1,778 rushing yards for 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions (Gatorade named him National Player of the Year including his three against future Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer).

In baseball, he was an honorary All-Conference Center fielder. In his first and only track and field season, Barber competed in the 2001 Minnesota State Class AA Championship in the 100 meters. He finished the season with a 100m time of 10.9 seconds
