Marla Maples/Donald Trump Divorce Settlement
Donald and Marla announced plans to divorce in 1997, just before their fourth anniversary. As part of the divorce settlement, Donald said his net worth was $1.17 billion, while Marla estimated his net worth at $100,000. Interestingly, Donald probably wasn’t a billionaire at the time.
Why Does He Inflate His Fortune?
Allegedly, the two had a sealed marriage contract that could only be broken if it was proven that Donald underestimated his net worth or hid the money. So he had the incentive to underestimate his wealth, and always an incentive to overestimate it. To calculate his net worth of $1.17 billion, Trump used what was later found to have greatly inflated the value of several assets. For example, he rated Trump’s Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City at $1.25 billion, the casino was said to have lost money and was buried in a mountain of debt. He put his two other casinos together and he’s valued at $1 billion. Both of these casinos later went bankrupt.
Marla Maples reportedly demanded $25 million to break up with Donald. Unfortunately for Marla, the terms of their marriage contract stipulated that if they broke up within five years, she would be required to pay $1 million. They broke up after four years. Under her less-than-five-year plan, Marla would be eligible to receive an additional $1 million to purchase her home, and she would receive $100,000 a year in child support until her daughter, Tiffany, turned 21. Tiffany was four years old at the time. Marla was also allowed to keep a $250,000 engagement ring.
