If you are a new laptop owner, you might not be that familiar with potential hazards that could cause serious issues. For example, switching from a desktop computer to a laptop is not as simple as one might think. There are quite a few things to consider when it comes to your laptop’s performance.
Knowing what hazards to expect and how to counter them should give you an advantage. Thus, let’s take a look at these hazards.
Laptop Safety Tips
Do not underestimate malware and viruses. Even minor inconveniences can snowball out of control and cause you problems.
You need to ensure that you create a proper cybersecurity strategy. From enabling the firewall and managing the accountsd details to using virtual private networking and running a reliable anti-malware tool in the background; invest as much as you can to protect your laptop from cybersecurity threats.
Pets On The Laptop
If you do not have any pets, this one should not be an issue. However, if there is a cat or multiple cats at your house and they like to roam freely, do not be surprised to see them sitting on a laptop when the computer is on. It is the heat that attracts cats. When the laptop is switched off, they will not be attracted to it.
You might be thinking that letting your cat rest on a laptop is not that big of a deal when the pet is not getting in your way, right? Well, the problem with this is all the cat hair that gets inside the laptop and clogs the internal hardware. Not to mention the hair on the keyboard and having to clean it.
After a while, you might hear loud noises coming from the internal fans. The laptop is also likely to overheat, and ventilating the room or investing in a cooling pad might not cut it.
You will eventually need to clean the filth that accumulates inside. It is not as easy as a laptop owner because you will need to take the device apart to clean it properly.
As you can see, it is better to keep your pets away from the laptop, so there are fewer problems with what gets inside the computer.
Incompetence Moving the Laptop
It might come as a surprise, but quite a few people do not bother thinking when they are carrying a laptop. There are also some instances when you give the computer to another person without considering whether they know how to handle a laptop.
Dropping a laptop on a hard surface is not the only potential thing that could happen. Not holding the device properly might break it, so keep that in mind whenever you or another person is using the laptop.
Failure To Manage Cables
Cable management is not as prominent of a problem as it is with desktop computers. Nevertheless, it is still crucial to make sure that the cables you use are not jumbled. Also, do not keep the cables on the ground when possible unless it is necessary. You or another person might step on it.
Cluttering a laptop’s drive and running out of space can happen quite fast. Some laptops do not have that much storage in the first place compared to desktop computers. Thus, if you are not careful, you might end up with only a few percent of the total available storage free.
As a rule of thumb, at least 15 percent of disk space should be free. Less than that, and you have a problem with the overall computer performance.
According to a useful post about MacBook clutter (most of which applies to other laptops), the emphasis should be put on removing temporary junk, such as app extensions, plugins, and old system backups.
Other than that, you can improve the laptop’s drive health by keeping tabs on downloads and localization files and removing them when they become unnecessary. Old applications should go as well.
Finally, get in the habit of transferring some files to external storage. There are hard drives, USB flash drives, and services like Dropbox and iCloud that allow you to transfer and keep files in another location.
There might be times when you forget to unplug the laptop’s charger after the battery is already at 100 percent. Overcharging for an hour or so is not the end of the world. However, charging the laptop overnight regularly will lead to problems.
You will notice that the battery does not last as long even if you are not running resource-heavy applications, and overcharging is one of the most common reasons behind the issue.
Drinking and Eating Next to the Laptop
Eating and drinking next to a computer is common, and most people probably do not consider what this behavior can do.
For example, you might be keen to eat or drink while watching a movie or a TV show. Or perhaps there is a pause in a video game you are playing, and you would like to take advantage of the free time and get yourself a snack.
Getting crumbs or spilling liquids on a keyboard or your desk and having to clean the mess is not fun. Besides, it is not just the mess that is annoying. The odds of damaging one of the laptop components are also relatively high.
