When you’re in the throes of winter, it can feel like the world will be cold and wet forever.
Fortunately, the season always comes to an end … eventually. And before spring officially arrives, it’s likely you’ll get a few breaks from the harsh and snowy weather.
The last thing you want to do is waste them! To make sure you don’t, here are five ways to make the most of an unseasonably warm winter day.

1. Keep Some Of Your Mild-Weather Clothing Handy
Most people only have so much available space in their dressers and closets.
That’s why they like to pack away all their warm-weather clothing as soon as winter hits.
But this can leave them with nothing but heavy sweaters and coats to wear on unusually warm days.
It’s wise to keep a good selection of mild-weather clothing out of the attic to keep you comfortable when the temperature rises unexpectedly.
While your dresser is doubtless primarily full of warm winter clothing this time of year, keep a few short-sleeved T-shirts at the ready.
Once you’re acclimated to very cold temperatures, a 55-degree day might feel like summertime to you! When chillier evening temperatures arrive, a Carhartt hoodie or lightweight jacket will keep you pleasantly warm.
Layering is a great way to make sure you stay comfortable when the weather changes.

2. Soak Up The Vitamin D
Vitamin D is sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced by the skin when it’s exposed to sunlight.
In addition to all its physical health benefits, vitamin D is also essential for maintaining good mental health.
People with low vitamin D levels are at higher risk of seasonal affective disorder.
Unfortunately, it’s common for individuals to experience low levels of this important vitamin during the winter months.
Winter’s shorter days are one obvious cause of this vitamin D deficit.
Furthermore, people tend to spend more time indoors during the winter, which means they don’t get adequate exposure to what sunlight there is.
Even those who participate in outdoor cold-weather activities may still not soak up much sunlight due to heavy cloud cover — and heavy clothing.
So when the weather warms up, take advantage by getting outside and creating some vitamin D.

3. Wash Your Car
Keeping your vehicle clean during the coldest months of the year can seem like a losing battle.
When slush, mud, and de-icing salt cover the roads, they inevitably splash up on your car as you drive.
When the sun comes out and melts the snow away, it’s the perfect time to wash and shine your ride.
Be careful about using conveyor-style automated car washes during the winter, though.
It’s common for gritty mud and slush from very dirty cars to get stuck in the brushes.
When you go through the wash, some of that rough material could cause small scratches in your vehicle’s paint.
If possible, use a touchless car wash or take the time to wash your car yourself by hand.
Don’t forget to apply a coat of wax to protect your paint against the de-icer onslaught that will accompany the next storm.

4. Air Out Your House
The air inside your house can get too still during the winter. This is a natural result of keeping the windows closed for extended periods.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to keep the warm air in and the cold air out.
But when you prevent outside airflow from entering for too long, you’ll end up with stagnant air. Such air can harbor contaminants that exacerbate asthma and allergies and lead to headaches or illness.
The minute a pleasant day rolls into town, open those windows and let the outdoor air inside.
Even if it’s not an overly breezy day, outdoor air will make its way inside and push the stagnant air out.
You can turn on overhead fans or place portable fans next to open windows to facilitate this process. The literal breath of fresh air this produces will make your home a more pleasant — and healthier — place to be.
5. Clean Your Carpets
Winter is a messy season, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow.
Even if you maintain a strict shoe-removal rule in your house, snow and mud can still find their way in.
Whether it hitchhikes on your child’s rolling backpack or your dog’s feet, it’s almost guaranteed to end up in your carpets.
When it does, it can cause an unpleasant smell that persists all winter long.
To get rid of that musty scent and overall dinginess, clean your carpets regularly throughout the winter.
Warm days are perfect for this because then you can crack the windows open. Warm breezes will help your freshly shampooed carpets dry faster.
