Doing keyword research is the difference between success and failure in the modern niche website world.

A great keyword researcher can rank fast with almost no effort. Someone who didn’t do their homework can spend months or years working on a project that never takes off.

It’s not a stretch to say that keyword research is the backbone that websites are built on nowadays. And you shouldn’t be using inferior tools or else your competition will blow you out of the water.

Ahrefs, which starts at $82 per month billed annually for its Lite plan, has made its name in the search engine optimization (SEO) space as one of the top crawlers on the market. Ahrefs maintains the one of the largest indexes of backlinks on the web, currently with more than 12 trillion historical backlinks and 6 billion web pages crawled per day.

The SEO tool also includes a number of other features and capabilities across ad-hoc keyword research, ongoing SEO monitoring and position tracking, content-specific research, and competitive domain comparison. Overall, Ahrefs can do a little bit of everything. While it lacks the keyword management and SEO reporting features of Editors’ Choice Moz Pro, and its bare-bones user experience (UX) can’t match that of Editors’ Choice SpyFu, Ahrefs does plenty beyond its signature crawling capabilities to warrant consideration and has invested in interface improvements, more advanced reporting, and better keyword management features since our initial review.

Pros: The design is focused on what you need, and you don’t get lost in SEO or SEM jargon. You can do a Site Audit, which gives you actionable information (and if you’re a consultant, a huge benefit to give your clients). Keywords lists are delivered and organized in a way that again gives you actionable items, as is the PPC research. Content marketing is made simple,. with suggested ideas, questions, and all outlined in a way that you can feel smart taking these actions. Excellent support always, and the downloadable Excel spreadsheets help you share this info beyond SEMRush.

Cons: The con is a basic con with all SEO/SEM tools in the age of Google. PPC data is rarely accurate in terms of what companies are spending, not the fault of SEMRush as much as the sources are unreliable (yes Google, talking about you), which makes what used to be an accurate measure more of a guess. Still you will get an understanding, but the PPC end must be looked at more from Adwords than trusting this tool, or any tool.
