In the ever-evolving landscape of smartphone technology, setting up your voicemail on an iPhone has become a streamlined process, offering features like Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail for a more efficient voicemail management experience.
Visual Voicemail Overview
In the Phone app, Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail (available from select carriers in specific countries or regions) present a list of your messages.

Setting Up Your Voicemail
The initial setup involves a few straightforward steps:
- Open the Phone app and tap on Voicemail.
- You’ll be prompted to create a voicemail password and record a greeting.
- Tap on Voicemail again, then select Set Up Now.
- Create a secure voicemail password.
- Choose a greeting – Default or Custom. Opt for Custom if you wish to record a personalized greeting.
Live Voicemail: Real-Time Transcription
Live Voicemail takes voicemail management to the next level. By enabling Live Voicemail, you can witness a real-time transcription as someone leaves you a message. Here’s how to activate it:
- Navigate to Settings > Phone > Live Voicemail.
- Toggle the Live Voicemail switch to turn it on.
Once Live Voicemail is active, your iPhone will answer incoming calls to capture voicemail in real-time. Please note that data rates may apply, and during this process, neither you nor the caller will be able to hear each other unless you choose to answer the call.
In cases where your iPhone is turned off or out of your carrier network’s range, the call is redirected to carrier voicemail, if available.
Additional Notes On Live Voicemail:
- Available only in English in the U.S. and Canada (excluding Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
- If Silence Unknown Callers is activated, unknown numbers go directly to Live Voicemail without ringing your phone.
