  • Threads Independence
  • Step-by-Step Guide

  • Thread Visibility Control
  • Platform Improvement

Earlier this year, Meta introduced Threads as a robust contender to X/Twitter.

The app quickly gained immense popularity, reaching 100 million users in just five days, thanks in part to its tight integration with Instagram.

However, users soon discovered a significant drawback—deleting your Threads account necessitated deleting your entire Instagram account. Despite initial excitement, interest in Threads dwindled over the months.

Now, in response to user feedback, Meta has addressed this limitation.

Instagram Head, Mr. Adam Mosseri, announced on Threads that users can now delete their Threads account independently without affecting their Instagram profile. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Account > Delete or Deactivate Profile.
  2. Choose “Delete profile” to permanently erase all Threads data.

It’s crucial to note the distinction between deactivating and deleting a profile. Deactivation is temporary, while deletion is a permanent action.

Users confident they won’t return to Threads should opt for deletion. Notably, these changes ensure that your Instagram account remains entirely unaffected by your decisions on Threads.

Additionally, Threads users can now control the visibility of their Threads profiles outside the app.

To retain Threads posts exclusively on Threads, users can disable the cross-platform discovery feature in Settings > Privacy.

However, it’s important to clarify that this setting doesn’t prevent Threads posts from appearing on Instagram; rather, it stops them from organically surfacing on other Meta platforms.

Users hope that Instagram will soon offer the option to disable Threads posts on the platform as well.
