In a historic moment for Uganda’s cricketing history, they secured qualification for the T20 World Cup by defeating Rwanda in the Africa region qualifier’s final game.

This victory not only marked Uganda’s first-ever qualification for the prestigious tournament but also had significant implications for Zimbabwe, who were denied a spot in the main event scheduled in the West Indies and the USA next year.

Namibia had already secured one of the two available qualification spots earlier in the competition.

As the final round of fixtures unfolded on November 30, Uganda, facing winless Rwanda, was the favorite to secure the qualification.

To have a chance at surpassing Uganda in the points table, Zimbabwe needed to defeat Kenya and rely on Uganda slipping against Rwanda.

However, Rwanda faced an early setback, losing a wicket in the first over and never recovering.

Rwanda’s batting lineup crumbled dramatically, with only two batters reaching double digits.

They were eventually bowled out for just 65 runs. Uganda easily chased down this total, winning by nine wickets and securing their place in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, despite a commendable effort by their captain Sikandar Raza, who scored a rapid 82 off 48 balls, posted 217 on the board.

Unfortunately, the loss to Uganda four days prior came back to haunt them, preventing Zimbabwe from qualifying for the T20 World Cup.

Uganda’s triumph and Zimbabwe’s missed opportunity highlighted the dramatic and historic nature of the qualifying matches.
