In a promising declaration for fans of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed his commitment to participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) until physical limitations prevent him from doing so.
Maxwell, who has been part of the IPL for over a decade, initially joined the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2012 and gained prominence in 2014 with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), amassing 552 runs at a striking rate of 187.75.
Having entered the IPL scene as the first million-dollar player in 2013 with Mumbai Indians, Maxwell experienced a breakthrough in 2014.
Despite a relatively quiet period in the subsequent five years, he showcased a resurgence with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) post the 2021 auction, consistently delivering notable performances with season tallies of 513, 301, and 400 runs in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively, each year demonstrating an improvement in strike rates.
Reflecting on his IPL journey, Maxwell highlighted the tournament’s significant impact on his career, citing the invaluable experiences of interacting with elite players like AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli.
He emphasized the learning opportunities derived from observing and engaging with top-notch coaches and international players throughout the tournament.
Maxwell’s appreciation for the IPL extends beyond personal development, as he expressed a desire for more Australian players to secure IPL opportunities, particularly with the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA on the horizon.
He hopes that participation in the IPL will enable Australian cricketers to acclimate to conditions similar to those they might encounter during the T20 World Cup.
Looking ahead, Maxwell, set to lead the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League opener, indicated that the focus for Australian cricket has already shifted to the next major objective – securing the T20 World Cup title.
As several Australian players gear up for the IPL auction on December 19, Maxwell anticipates an exciting summer, both in the IPL and subsequent tournaments.
