If you think that traveling is about packing a bag, hopping on a plane, train, or perhaps starting a road trip, and seeing what happens, you could be in for a big – and not necessarily pleasant – surprise.
Although there is certainly something to be said for being spontaneous and letting the journey lead you, it’s also crucial to have at least some plans in place and to think about things before you set off to ensure you’re going to have the best time.
If spontaneous travel sounds fun, imagine how much better it would be with a little additional planning thrown in.
With that in mind, here are some of the most important things to do and think about when you travel to make sure you have the trip of a lifetime.
Plan Ahead
Some people love to plan and create a minute-by-minute itinerary for their travels. Others hate it, and feel it ruins the vacation.
In reality, you want to be in the middle of these two points of view. You don’t want to plan so much that there’s no room for any changes and you just get stressed because you have to keep checking the time and moving from thing to thing without really taking it in, and neither do you want to arrive and not know what to do, thereby wasting a lot of time and potentially missing out.
Planning your vacation should be a fun thing to do, and if you make it part of the trip itself, it’s not such a chore.
Once you know where you are going, sit down and make a list of the things to do in Philadelphia, for example, that you definitely want to see.
Work out when you can do what, and book a few things in advance. Make everything else flexible, and you’ll be able to make the most of your time when you get to your destination.
Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Going on vacation is the ideal time to try new things, and in fact, this is known to be good for you. You don’t have to do anything dangerous or anything you truly don’t want to do, but if something piques your interest and you’ll never have another chance to try it again, why not go for it? You’ll make some amazing memories, and you won’t have any regrets.
Stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be something like bungee jumping or white-water rafting (unless you want to do this, of course); it could be something as relatively simple as trying a new type of food or attending a local event. You’ll know how far you want to take this idea; just make sure you take it somewhere.
Relax
When you begin to think about your next big travel adventure, you might come up with dozens of things you want to do, and try to cram them all into the one or two weeks you’re going to be away.
Even if you’re traveling for longer, trying to fill every minute with ‘something to do’ is not a good idea. You must make time to relax.
We get very stressed in our day-to-day lives. We work hard, have families to take care of, bills to pay, and we also have to try to keep up socially. It’s a lot, and it can take its toll.
When you go on vacation, you have a chance to forget all of this and do nothing, truly relaxing for the first time in potentially years. With this in mind, although it’s good to explore new places and do new things, make sure you leave enough time to relax and unwind, as you’ll definitely appreciate it.
